Best and Worst Anime of 2008

As the year draws ever closer to an end, it’s time to stop for a bit and look back at the year that was 2008. Although this year I didn’t complete a lot of series that I was blogging, as well as not blog for an entire season, I still ended up watching them through to the end. Like past years, I have a few rules when it comes to determining if a series belongs in a certain year:

  • The series must have aired in 2008.
  • If a series has transitioned from last year to this year, majority of the episodes must have screened in 2008.
  • I must have watched the show.
  • If a show is transitioning from this year to next year, it will not be considered for this year’s awards.
  • It can be either a TV series, OVA, or movie.

So without further ado, here are my thoughts on the year 2008.

Best Action & Best Mecha - Macross Frontier

Without a shadow of a doubt that this year’s No.1 would be Macross Frontier. It provided all the action and more just more action that simply can’t be rivaled in any other series this year. Although transforming fighter planes is nothing new, it’s the principle that something from the past can still be so awesome in today’s otaku world.

Runner Ups: Code Geass (Best Action & Mecha), Hellsing Ultimate (best action)

Best Animation - Kara no Kyoukai 5th movie

Now most probably wouldn’t know about KnK 5 since the DVD doesn’t come out till January 2009, I did get to watch this in Japan back in August when it was screening on the big screen. But most know the quality of KnK movies so far and by far this is the winner for 2008.

Runner Ups: true tears, Wolf and Spice

To Love-Ru - 12

Once again we are doomed with another filler episode. At this point I wouldn’t be too surprised if half the series turned out to be filler episodes given the rate that To Love-Ru s turning out. Though I’m sure there was an athletics carnival chapter in the manga but I’m quite sure it didn’t turn out like this, so essentially this is still a filler episode. However this episode does have all the recently introduced characters and that they each actually get a fair amount of screen time.

To Love-Ru - 11

The one and only episode I’ve been waiting for, the introduction of Golden Darkness, but let’s stick to Yami-chan since it’s easier and it’s more cute. By far this is the best episode of To Love-Ru as it followed the manga pretty closely and we haven’t had that for a few episodes so far. There were plenty of cute moments as well as some ecchi moments but it all played out pretty well, but it’s pretty amazing how Rito gets into these situations and how he manages to get out of them as well. And what was the thing between Zastin and Lala? A Deviluke form of rock paper scissors? At least we saw some leg action from Lala.

To Love-Ru - 10

Once again we’ve hit another filler episode with another alien who is trying to take Lala away, but this time not for marriage reasons. It’s rather strange that the president of Lala’s fan club happens to be an old lady type of person but since they’re aliens she could possibly be younger than she seems. Rather obvious that Lala didn’t want to go back to space to do an idol CD and seeing how Stellar sensed Haruna as a replacement was pretty predictable.

To Love-Ru - 09

Firstly, shitty raws are shit, I don’t know why I got this crappy raw for. Anyway ths episode is just a filler episode with another alien claiming to be Lala’s future husband. Seriously I can’t believe I actually sat through and watched this episode as it was pretty stupid as well. An alien whose ability is mainly flying rockets? Not very creative. I get the feeling that we may see more of these types of fillers just so they can fill in the gaps since the series is going for 2 cours (well I think it is).

To Love-Ru - 08

I must certainly say, side characters are the absolute best, and this episode we’re introduced to Kotegawa Yui. Compared to Ren/Run’s introduction last episode, Yui’s turned out much better. It didn’t waste so much time on running jokes and it actually progressed somewhat in her introduction and we get to see Yui go out in full force with her moral enforcement and isolating Rito as the cause for everything.

To Love-Ru - 07

This was one of the episode I was lookig forward to as it was the introduction episode for Ren/Run, but damn I never thought it would go so long winded. I’m relatively sure that the chapter introducing Ren wasn’t all that long but recently I’ve noticed how this series tends to drag a few things out just to reach the 24 minute mark, which isn’t all that bad, but can get rather lame at times. However with this being a Ren episode and the whole focus on him being manly was just awesome and funny as well.
