So who would’ve thought that a school trip to the school would be different? Well from Sora’s point of view, it is different. Different in a way that most of us would perceive this as just a another day at school, but in fact, it’s a way to reflect back on the memories without the hustle and bustle of the daily grind. This episode we look back to the past and how Sora, Natsumi, and Hazuki ended up joining the art club and how they first met. Still I think it’s nice how the three girls were thinking back to that point in time, even though they were apart. Similar minds?

A day out with the cats has always been a treat in Aria, but here in Sketchbook, it has taken that one step further, this time the cats can talk! I’ve always wondered what it would be like to hear Aria-shachou, Hime-shachou and Maa-kun talking amongst themselves, but personally I think Mike, Haa, and Kuma have given us something much more than what Aria and company can offer. Every slice of life anime must have a Summer Festival, and Sketchbook is no exception. However they’ve also added in Sora’s little brother Ao, and we see most of this episode from his perspective. I find it rather amusing that Ao was the more reliable one when it came to cooking as it’s usually the other way around. But you have to love Sora in how she finds that little bit of happiness in everything. Though I don’t understand why she was pretending to play the game with Ao.

OP: “Kaze Sagashi” by Kiyoura Natsumi
This week we get to see the actual OP sequence, it does well to reflect what the series is about. Just the everyday slow-paced life of Sora and of the people around her.

For a first episode, this was a really enjoyable watch. With clean animation, the slow but steady pacing of the story, and the variety of unique characters, could make this a definite watch for this season. Although this series is based on a 4koma manga, the way it flows doesn’t make it seem that way. With that slice of life element, it definitely feels like something similar to ARIA, but focused on drawing rather than being an undine.
