Sketchbook ~full color’S~ - 13

With a lot of slice of life series, there really is no ending, and the same applies to Sketchbook. With everyone gathering together to enjoy the sakura trees, and with the introduction of Ooba Tsukiyo, it was a nice way to start off the last episode, and as the episode progressed, we see each of the characters in the way that Sora perceives them through her painting of the photograph. By doing this, I feel that it’s taken a step back and we think back to the episodes of when Sora was interactig with all the different characters and portraying to us the bonds they share.

A day out into the city can bring about many wonderful things as it’s almost like an adventure, well assuming you don’t head into the city often. And for these girls, it was an adventure, and to kick it off, the episode went off ARIA style with the opening theme playing whilst we watch the girls do various things, not to mention it was a new upbeat song to reflect the fun they had together.

Sketchbook has a running theme about friendship, either in the human world, or in the cat world, but this episode hits it nail right on the head. Sora ended up catching a cold had to stay home to rest. Throughout the day she was bored and feeling rather lonely, but by the end of the day, her friends came by to see how she was. Although it’s a recurring thing that you see in most anime, but it feels that Sketchbook makes that kind of thing more special and much more appreciated. Everyone had brought gifts in hope for Sora to get better, and with these gifts, Sora knows that she isn’t alone and is happy with everyone’s feelings. Even Ryo and Fuu came by to drop off a gift.

Wow it feels so long since I lasted watched an episode of Sketchbook, and watching an episode makes me remember why this is such a soothing series. This episode, Kasugano-sensei takes them out for another trip, but this time it’s only a little further from the school grounds. With the season being Autumn, there is sure a variety of things to see and Sora notices all these little things as she always does with everyone else. Too bad I don’t take notice of these kind of things since Autumn here is rather dull and you rarely get that mixtures of green, brown, orange and red.

This was a rather interesting episode for me as I can relate to this from my final days of high school. The HSC (Higher School Certificate) exam period was a time of concentration, but also a lot of frustration. However it did bring about many interesting things when it came to actually studying, especially the whole asking people for study techniques. But just as this episode has shown, everyone have their own techniques to studying for an exam, but the best way is definitely what the club president had said, and that is to listen and class and review what you learnt at the end of the day.

As the series started, I always thought Ryou and Fuu were a little odd, but their small antics now and then brought humour to the show, but after this episode, they were just awesome. Normally I wouldn’t take notice of such characters in a series, but with Sketchbook being a rather slow-paced series, Ryou and Fuu make it pretty fast paced. Their ignorance of the obvious surely may seem weird in the eyes of Hazuki and Natsumi, but it simply means that thye are adding humour to their everyday lives. Plus it was funny seeing Hazuki and Natsumi’s reactions to Ryou and Fuu’s antics.

There’s something about the foreign student in school based animes that make them so awesome, like Ana from Ichigo Mashimaro, Eri from School Rumble, or Remi from To Heart. Now we have Kate from Sketchbook. Her addition to the cast of characters is a most welcome one as she brings in plenty of laughs into this series. Though I never saw Sketchbook as a series that would include a lot of humour, but even with the addition of Kate, it raises the humour only enough to not divert the series from what it is, a slice of life show.
