ef - a tale of memories - 05

Last episode we saw quite a development, but right now, it’s kind of slowed down once again. We’re once again back to the same routine of seeing Renji and Chihiro talking, but then she does have a memory disorder. However I think the only interesting part this entire episode was Chihiro’s comparison of herself to the sheep in her math problem. I found it to be a pretty good analogy of her situation where her mindset is always at the point where she got into the accident, and the length of 13 hours is the reach of her arm. I guess you could see it as her arm reaches out to 13 hours, before pulling it back, thus resetting time again.

ef - a tale of memories - 04

Usually around this point of a series it should start getting interesting, especially if it’s only slated for 12 episodes. And with episode 4, it’s only starting to show the more interesting parts. Firstly with Chihiro and Renji, quite a development for them this episode especially with the two of them finally confessing their love for each other, but what I found fascinating was the fact that Chihiro felt so different from yesterday and today. The memory loss is a part of it, but the way she is so confused about herself in terms of love is pretty dramatic in it’s own sense. Although Renji is pushing for Chihiro to write a novel, I wonder what this would accomplish. For someone like Chihiro, dreams almost mean nothing if she can’t remember the previous day. I think that Renji sees the writing a novel is a way for him to connect with Chihiro, just like how the diary connects Chihiro from yesterday, to Chihiro from today. But now that they have confessed to each other, it does make me curious on how this plays out, and IF it’ll lead to some kind of cure to Chihiro’s memory loss, but I really doubt that.

ef - a tale of memories - 03

After last episode’s little surprise about Chihiro, I was hoping they would work on it more for this episode, but they didn’t do much at all. However this episode does bring to light a different perspective on things when it comes to Chihiro’s memory condition and that we get a small understanding from her point of her. I don’t think there could be anything more painful than people forgetting about you rather than yourself forgetting, and Renji now sees the importance of his friendship with Chihiro now. However at this point I don’t think we can see anything developing form this for a little while.

With Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei ending last season, I can see SHAFT has decided to go the same route with the different style of visuals for ef. I can certainly say that animation of the skies and the random colours definitely looked amazing. It’s almost like watching something Shinkai Makoto made himself. Though it does make me think how ef would turn out if SHAFT didn’t go for this kind of style? The game itself uses a lot of dark colours, and with the artistic elements added to the anime, it makes it much more interesting.

Opening Sequence:

No OP them for the first episode, but an instrumental piece was played instead. I like how they also used greyscale drawings/animation for the OP sequence of this episode but I look forward to seeing what the proper OP looks like.

ef - a tale of memories ~prologue~

Impressions

One of the new shows coming up for the Autumn season if ef - a tale of memories, and it is one of the shows that I highly anticipate. ef is based off the game ef - a fairy tale of the two which is produced by minori, who have produced other games such as Wind ~A Breath of Heart~ and Bittersweet Fools. The first thing that draws me to ef is the character designs, which is done by none other than Nanao Naru (Da Capo, Canvas2, sola) and ef is one that shows some of her darker themed works (what i mean is the use of dark colours).

Personally I have never actually played the ef game, and I don’t intend to since I don’t have the time, but I do know that ef - a fairy tale of the two is only the first half of the game. There is still a second part to be released. So it makes me wonder how this anime series will turn out as the game itself is also quite long. What I do hope is that this goes for 26 episodes as having 26 episodes with animation quality as high as this would be pure awesome.

The music is going to be produced by Tenmon, who is also the music producer of all of Shinkai Makoto’s works, so we can expect an awesome soundtrack for this. Though I don’t think Shinkai Makoto is taking a part in the anime series, I hope he’ll at least direct the opening sequence like he did for the ef game. So with animation done by Shaft, character designs by Nanao Naru, and music by Tenmon, I can’t wait till ef - a tale of memories starts airing.
