Mini’s off to Japan again
I honestly wasn’t expecting to be able to go to Japan again this soon, having been to Comiket last year. My original plan was to stick around until I found a new job, then get settled in and build up my leave allowance again until next August or so. Then things started to happen.

Where I’m working right now, they celebrate milestones: 3 years, then 5 and 10. I don’t know what happens at 20 – maybe you get put on an Oceanic Airlines flight for a long strange trip. I’m a few months away from the 3 year mark so I figured I’d hang in there, get my little plaque, make my CV look a bit nicer. And hey, it’s actually an OK place to work. I’m convinced that job satisfaction is a myth – but I digress.
I decided to check my annual leave count to see how many days I had left, and lo and behold, I had more in store than I first thought. Same went for my frequent flyer points balance.
Then I did something really stupid – I read Danny Choo’s recent post about Akihabara. The memories came flooding back, my wanderlust reasserted itself, and five minutes later I was left on the floor of my study, curled up in the foetal position, sobbing quietly and mumbling random lines from Morning Musume songs.
Adun’s constant Twittering of “10 weeks! 9 weeks! Engine start!” had absolutely no effect on me, obviously. (Bastard)
So, in the space of three days, I applied for leave, booked my flight tickets, booked my accommodation, and started getting the rest sorted out. Some people would be more sensible, put some more thought into ventures like this, make bookings months in advance. Not me baby – I play fast and dangerous and stupid, damn the consequences.
I don’t have any grand plans for when I get to Tokyo. There’s a few things on the cards though:
- Akihabara, of course. The added benefit is that since it’ll be post-Comiket, there won’t be quite so many crowds as when I went last year. Oh and I’ll be able to go there on the weekend, when things apparently get even livelier.
- Some doll show that Adun told me about. I’ll be bringing a proper SLR camera this time – nothing as good as Adun’s setup but at least it’ll be semi-pro.
- Seeing the 1:1 scale Gundam – or in my case, “seeing it again “. Somehow the Gundam moved itself to Shizuoka, got itself a paint job and some added gear.
- Drinking with Adun. Which actually means me having one drink, then watching Adun and his pals get smashed so I can grab some material for blackmail and amusing blog posts.
While Adun’s doing his Grand Asia Pacific All-You-Can-Eat Tour, I’ll only be going to Area 11 Glorious Nippon. The rest of Asia doesn’t hold much appeal to me.
Two more unrelated matters: the picture at the top of this blog post has almost nothing to do with the post itself. I guess Flandre is gazing west, and I’ll be flying in a north-north-west direction, so there’s a very tenuous link. But it’s my post, and I’ll include a picture of my second-favourite vampire just because I can. Oh, and I wrote this post while listening to the Inception soundtrack, which made for a very confusing and terrifying experience. I’m not even sure if I’m actually writing this post for real.
