Sora no Woto – 01

Psst, hey, the show’s about to start. Geez.

Another new anime season, another new musical anime. Ever since I saw the character designs and subsequent trailer, I’ve been chomping at the bit to watch this show. Even at this early stage, Sora no Woto is meeting my expectations and, if it wasn’t for a certain ex-Prime Minister, this series could be a shoe-in for my 2K10 Anime of the Year.

The start of some beautiful music?

Plot Summary: Private Kanata Sorami, along with her trumpet, is sent to the town of Seize to serve with the 1221st Platoon. We can assume at this point that she’ll be sticking to non-combat duties. On the way to the Time-Keeping Fortress, Kanata unwittingly takes part in Seize’s water festival, has a chance meeting with Rio, learns about the town’s legend of the “maidens of flame”, and takes a long dive to retrieve a lost keepsake.

An innocent face

Kanata: Like a certain guitar girl we know and love, Kanata is itching to play some great music. Unlike that other girl, Kanata has some musical foundation, though her skill with the trumpet would be charitably described as “rookie-ish”. At first glance Kanata appears to be the kind of person who is always bright and smiling, but one reason she set out on her journey is because of a personal tragedy, and from that comes the fact that she hates to be alone. I can’t wait to see what musical heights she’ll reach and even if she doesn’t get anywhere, she’s still so damn cute.

VA: Hisako Kanemoto
Most relevant other role: None – she’s practically a newbie. Impressive first hit.

Ready to dish out some tough love

Rio: Kareha’s first impressions of Rio would have painted her as a super-strict sergeant, but that’s more because she doesn’t abide nonsense rather than having a chip on her shoulder. Rio has softened up to Kareha enough to poke some fun at her, and they’re going to stay close thanks to the trumpet tuition.

VA: Yu Kobayashi
Most relevant other role: Mahou Sensei Negima’s Setsuna Sakurazaki

Mother hen

Felicia: The captain of the Time-Keeping Fortress, Felicia appears to be the patient type who’s able to keep the others in line (possibly no small task thanks to Kureha). She’s not above a little scheming to make things happen the way she wants them. I’m almost dead certain that Felicia will be Adun’s favourite girl from this series.

VA: Aya Endo
Most relevant other role: Lucky Star’s Miyuki Takara

Is it time for lunch yet?

Noel:So far the Fortress’s resident tank mechanic is a cypher. She appears to be a few words, and it’s anyone’s guess as to how she’ll develop in this series.

VA: Aoi Yuuki
Most relevant other role: None that I know of – this is the first time I’ve heard her voice

“Only one minute of screen-time!? Intolerable!”

Kureha: Pretty obvious that she’s the series’ token “Onee-sama-complex” character. Also as befits her stature, Kureha appears to be the most impatient of the group.

VA: Eri Kitamura
Most relevant other role: Kodomo no Jikan’s Rin Kokonoe (so Kureha will be Punynari’s favourite? Hehheh)

See, Rio’s not always a sourpuss

First Impressions: I’m going to let my musical bias show through again and say that Aniplex has a winner on its hands. This series has cuteness, good tunes, and soul. Looking forward to seeing what direction Sora no Woto will take.

This does look like it’ll be pretty good – it’ll be interesting to see where they take it, since with the war, the legend of the demon, and everything else there’s a lot of ways they could go.

I was a lot more interested in this before they changed the art style to match k-on.

Now I’m kind of on the fence about even giving it a try. =/

Aoi Yuuki would probably be best known for the role of Murasaki in “Kurenai”.

I was on the edge with this one. With her and Endou Aya, there is no doubt I’ll be watching this.

Well, this is something totally different from K-On!, despite the hardcore similarity in artwork.
This was a rly good series; however, it’s not fast paced. I want to see it again, after reading an in-depth review about it, which made me think back about the whole series.
