Supanova Sydney 09 – Part 2
Continuing on from Part 1, this section covers the Madman National Cosplay Competition and the regular Cosplay Competition. At first I wasn’t sure what the difference was between the Madman National Cosplay Competition and the normal Cosplay Competition, but all was explained eventually. The Madman competition was a chance for the national winner to take a trip to Japan for 7 days and do stuff. Details can be found here. And the Cosplay Competition was the same as usual. So hit the jump to check out the photos from the cosplay competitions. Warning: Picture intensive post.
One of the problems I find at conventions ALL THE TIME is the lack of space for photographers to come around to take photos. This year the layout of chairs was terrible compared to last year as the chairs were set as two section with a row down the middle, and that the chairs seemed closer to the stage than ever. But really I can’t do much since I’m an attendee and I make the best of what I can. It would be awesome if there was a section dedicated for the photographers to sit and take photos, but I know that’s not feasible. I guess the only option would be to volunteer as a photographer for the conventions as I’d have freedom to do whatever.
Anyway moving along, the first competition was the Madman National Cosplay Competition. This competition only had six entries as they bring only the best of the best. Well I’m sure they go through a screening process before being allowed entry into the competition in similar fashion to what the WCS Competition at Animania does.
Madman National Cosplay Competition
This guy isn’t a part of the competition, but he’s one of the Supanova worker monkeys.
This Lelouch cosplay was the winner of the Madman National Cosplay Competition.
Some pretty awesome cosplay for this competition, but like most conventions I can barely hear the recording they made for their skit. With the Lelouch cosplayer, not only does she get to goto the finals, but she also gets to appear on Sunrise. I missed watching it this morning as I was still asleep. Next up is the normal Cosplay Competition.
This Shana was awesome as she also had Melon-pan with her. Too bad the photo didn’t turn out as good.
Green Power Ranger was dancing to Mr Roboto
First thing that came to mind was Left4Dead
I think this was the only Jedi I saw the entire day
Gotta love big groups like these.
Yes that’s right, it’s Tetris!
Random guys from Dawson’s Creek. Why Dawson’s Creek??
And that pretty much covers the Cosplay Competitions for Supanova Sydney 2009 Saturday. I didn’t bother going the Sunday as I really wasn’t up to going again for a second day. Overall the competition was pretty bland. Only a select few cosplays I thought were really good and the ones I would’ve like to see didn’t enter the competition at all. Still there was a total of 60 entries for the normal competition and it felt pretty long that my hands was starting to hurt from RSI.
One complaint I have about the cosplay wasn’t the cosplay itself, but the actual audience. icie and myself were right at the front row of seats, and unfortunately we were sitting next to two 14 year olds who literally SCREAMED at the top of their lungs. Conventions tend to bring out the worse of fans where even a member of the audience complaining about the Supanova photographer getting in their way. Also the whole thing of “kill the host” gets old quick after a while. But if it pleases the crowds, it pleases the crowd.
On a brighter note, I’d like to give thanks to the person who decided to use a black curtain as a backdrop. It is a HUGE improvement over last year where the white wall at the back would bounce back all the flashes. The photos I am semi-pleased thanks to the shiny new lens but once again, still held back because of the camera body. I would love to be able to take better photos without the flash, but really in an environment like a convention, that’s just not possible with low-end equipment that I have now. Hopefully one day I’ll be able to do it!
Anyway that’s the end of the Supanova Sydney 2009 coverage, don’t forget to check out Part 1. The next post to look forward to is my loot post.
