Can’t go shoppin’ or rockin’ on an empty stomach
Yui’s joined the band but has no idea how to play a guitar. She needs the skills but, more importantly, she needs a guitar of her own. What’s a girl to do?
The second episode of K-ON getting closer as a team, with scatterbrained Yui being the catalyst. The anime diverges from the manga with regards to how Yui gets her guitar - in the original work, the girls went straight from looking at guitars to Tsumugi getting the price lowered, without the part-time jobs. I think the change is for the better - it lets us see more of the characters interacting with each other, and provides for more moments of comedy (Ritsu improvising on the counting machine, “occupational disease”).

“It will be mine. Oh yes. It will be mine.” - Wayne Campbell Yui Hirasawa
Yui: She’s finally making an effort to get it together, after spending most of her life with her head in the clouds. Yui joining the band is what gets everyone more motivated to work together, and her lack of focus ends up bringing the girls closer together by turning the guitar shopping day into an impromptu bonding session. Yui shows off her selfless side too - even after putting in a few days’ work as traffic counters, she gives the pay back to the others instead of sinking it into her guitar fund. Someone just nominate her for patron saint of moe already.

Mio works the dere-dere magic
Mio: She presents an interesting paradox: a band member who wouldn’t be able to deal with audiences if she was centre-stage. Though when the going gets tough, Mio is quite capable of summoning her courage to do what needs to be done. She’s also getting into the role of being a mentor for Yui in matters guitar-related.

Sit, Yui. Good puppy, here’s a treat for you!
Tsumugi: The resident “princess of the highlands” demonstrates again that she’s the band’s quiet strength. Even though she comes from a posh family, Tsumugi is the most stable member of the quartet by providing a pleasant atmosphere with nothing more than tea sets, snacks, and a sunny disposition. She also acts well as a mediator - Tsumugi is quick enough to know that the way to Yui’s heart is via her stomach.

Hey, listen - all my ideas are good!
Ritsu: The small-fingered fearless leader steps up to the plate when a fellow bandmember’s in need. Ritsu shows that she didn’t choose to be the light music club’s president just for the name: she’s adept at coming up with schemes and cajoling the others to join in. Her unlimited energy (except when counting cars) is proving to be infectious, which is appropriate for the band member who sets the tempo.
Another stellar episode, another long wait of several days. Can’t it be Friday now?

And- your next entry!
I did notice that the show actually went and did a different take on the manga (omg kyoani’s not following it 100% now!), but it was definitely an enjoyable one. By the end though, it actually stopped roughly at the end of chapter 2, so it seems they’re taking a very strict chapter-by-chapter approach.

That’s one thing I forgot to write about - the differences between the manga and anime. It’s something I’ll touch upon in the episode 3 write-up.

Nice to see Kyo Ani giving attention to the most deserving girl, unlike Clannad where they gave Kyou the shaft, and I don’t even mean Tomoya’s….

Them’s fightin’ words, mister!
Nah, just kidding. If everyone liked the same characters, the anime blogosphere would be a boring place.
