Best and Worst Anime of 2008
As the year draws ever closer to an end, it’s time to stop for a bit and look back at the year that was 2008. Although this year I didn’t complete a lot of series that I was blogging, as well as not blog for an entire season, I still ended up watching them through to the end. Like past years, I have a few rules when it comes to determining if a series belongs in a certain year:
- The series must have aired in 2008.
- If a series has transitioned from last year to this year, majority of the episodes must have screened in 2008.
- I must have watched the show.
- If a show is transitioning from this year to next year, it will not be considered for this year’s awards.
- It can be either a TV series, OVA, or movie.
So without further ado, here are my thoughts on the year 2008.
Best Action & Best Mecha – Macross Frontier
Without a shadow of a doubt that this year’s No.1 would be Macross Frontier. It provided all the action and more just more action that simply can’t be rivaled in any other series this year. Although transforming fighter planes is nothing new, it’s the principle that something from the past can still be so awesome in today’s otaku world.
Runner Ups: Code Geass (Best Action & Mecha), Hellsing Ultimate (best action)
Best Animation – Kara no Kyoukai 5th movie
Now most probably wouldn’t know about KnK 5 since the DVD doesn’t come out till January 2009, I did get to watch this in Japan back in August when it was screening on the big screen. But most know the quality of KnK movies so far and by far this is the winner for 2008.
Runner Ups: true tears, Wolf and Spice
Best Comedy - Kyouran Kazoku Nikki
I had a bit of trouble figuring this one out as a lot of shows have comedy, but are mixed with other genres. But in the end I realised there was only one series that really made me laugh a lot throughout 2008. That’s right, the Midarazaki family in Kyouran Kazoku Nikki. Plenty of zanyness and with a family of some rather unique statures it was my pick for comedy.
Runner Ups: Zoku Sayonara Zetsubou Sensi, Detroit Metal City
Best Drama – true tears
At first I was skeptical about this series, but as the episodes went on, it became something much more. The love triangle between Noe, Hiromi, and Shinichiro mixed with their own personal problems of one’s own feelings just created an unforgettable drama for 2008.
Runner Ups: Itazura na Kiss, Da Capo II
Best Slice of Life – ARIA The ORGINATION
Seriously if this wasn’t the Best Slice of Life, I would give away all my ARIA merchandise. Thankfully that isn’t the case. The portrayal of Akari, Aika, and Alice promoted to Undine, the departure of Alicia, and Akari’s taking over ARIA Company are just the few things that made this series the pinnacle of slice of life.
Runner Ups: Natsume Yuujinchou, Mahou Tsukai ni Taisetsu na Koto ~ Natsu no Sora~
Best Music – Macross Frontier
Just like previous Macross series, Macross Frontier has produced a number of hits through it’s entirety accounting for different types of music as well. Whether you like the fast paced diva Sheryl Nome, or the more upbeat pop princess Ranka Lee, they are sure to please all ears.
Runner Ups: ef ~a tale of melodies~
Best Male Character – Johannes Krauser II
Really there is no better winner than Johannes Krauser II. I would say he literally came out of hell and killed all the other contestants to take the title. Though I’m sure the other him would want to congratulate the others or something like that.
Runner Ups: Lelouch Lamperouge (Code Geass), Okazaki Tomoya (CLANNAD)
Best Female Character – Sheryl Nome and Ranka Lee
Now this is a first, where two female characters came equal place. The thing about these two are that they are polar opposites with each with unique traits, but in the end you could never choose one over the other. But when you combine the two together in a battle to save the universe, they are simply just one.
Runner Ups: Asakura Yume, Aihara Kotoko
Best Anime – Macross Frontier
No doubt that Macross Frontier has taken most of the Best categories and there was no doubt that it would also take Best Anime for 2008. The series contained everything from good plot development, likable characters, great deal of action and drama, and matching along with a great music both vocally and instrumental. It’s a shame that we probably won’t be seeing another Macross series for a while, but I do hope it’ll be just as good as Macross Frontier and it’s predecessors.
That concludes the Best Categories. Many people may think differently which is understandable, though when I think of what series deserves what it’s rather difficult given the amount of series that I end up watching. And a lot of the time I also forget what has aired over the course of the year. Anyway moving onto the Worst of 2008:
Worst Animation – H20 ~Footprints in the Sand~
At the moment nothing is coming to mind except H20. There were just so many things wrong with this series and animation quality was one of them. Every time I watched this I cringed just knowing how bad the quality was, yet I somehow watched it all to the end.
Worst Story – Rosario + Vampire
Boobs, boobs, panties, panties. That’s pretty much what this series is about. The overall premise seemed good at the start, but simply just got worse after episode 1 and was practically going nowhere. I’m even surprised there was a second season of this within the same year and yet again it was the same thing over and over again.
Runner Up: Kimi ga Aruji de Shitsuji ga Ore de
Most Anti-Climatic Series – World Destruction
Throughout the series, I thought it was going somewhere good, but come closer to the end it was just utter disappointment. The way how things resolved and how Morte’s sudden change in attitude about destroying the world left a rather bad taste at the end.
Most Boring Series – Kanokon
One can only take so much fanservice but Kanokon certain took it overboard for me. There’s only so many times that you can enjoy seeing the same breasts or buttocks of a very sexy character who tries to get in the pants of the main protagonist. Probably also Mamiko Noto’s worst role to date.
Most Dragged Out Series – To LOVE-Ru
Although I’m a huge fan of the manga, the anime series just did no justice what so ever. I know there is plenty of manga material but the To LOVE-Ru series was just plagued with so many filler or anime original episodes. Very rarely did it come out with one that came from the manga and just waiting for one was painful enough.
Worst Anime – H20 ~Footprints in the Sand~
Definitely has to be the worst anime of 2008. At the start I thought it was rather interesting, but given how Hayami’s attitude, Hinata/Hotaru’s identity case, Takuma being a pretty lousy protagonist and just the way the series ended was terrible in the end. The promo stated that this would rock my soul, but the only thing that it rocked was a few brain cells , but in a bad way.
That pretty much ends my review of Anime of 2008. Though there are not that many categories listed for Worst as I can’t really think of that many series that were that bad. Not to mention I’m also writing this under the influence of alcohol. In the end 2008 was a pleasant year of anime and I look forward to what 2009 will bring us.
