As the year draws ever closer to an end, it’s time to stop for a bit and look back at the year that was 2008. Although this year I didn’t complete a lot of series that I was blogging, as well as not blog for an entire season, I still ended up watching them through to the end. Like past years, I have a few rules when it comes to determining if a series belongs in a certain year:
- The series must have aired in 2008.
- If a series has transitioned from last year to this year, majority of the episodes must have screened in 2008.
- I must have watched the show.
- If a show is transitioning from this year to next year, it will not be considered for this year’s awards.
- It can be either a TV series, OVA, or movie.
So without further ado, here are my thoughts on the year 2008.
Best Action & Best Mecha - Macross Frontier

Without a shadow of a doubt that this year’s No.1 would be Macross Frontier. It provided all the action and more just more action that simply can’t be rivaled in any other series this year. Although transforming fighter planes is nothing new, it’s the principle that something from the past can still be so awesome in today’s otaku world.
Runner Ups: Code Geass (Best Action & Mecha), Hellsing Ultimate (best action)
Best Animation - Kara no Kyoukai 5th movie

Now most probably wouldn’t know about KnK 5 since the DVD doesn’t come out till January 2009, I did get to watch this in Japan back in August when it was screening on the big screen. But most know the quality of KnK movies so far and by far this is the winner for 2008.
Runner Ups: true tears, Wolf and Spice

With the New Year approaching us very soon, it’s time to look back at the year that was 2008 and see how far my BURNING PASSION has taken me. 2008 has definitely been an interesting year for me as many factors such as increased salaries, the ever decreasing amount of space in my room, the EPIC Japan trip, the world financial crisis, and my otaku burnout all play a role in my spending habits. So hit the jump to check out my report of the year 2008.

One of the perks about owning a dollfie is the ability to customise them. Customise as in dress them up in different attire to get a different feel, a different personality, and for my Erika I want to do exactly that. Although I’m not exactly knowledgeable in the realm of dollfies just yet, I do know that there are various items of clothing available for them, either produced professionally or even hand made. This is all good and all but I’m still stumped at what type of clothes I want for my girl. But as I was browsing the Volks Dollfie Dream section on the official site I saw this:

A hobby is something that takes our minds off the reality of the the daily grind. Our escape from stress and the path to finding enjoyment in life. Most of the time it’s something that we do in our free time, or even that step further by incorporating their hobby with their jobs. I unfortunately fall into the former category and free time is something I have little of these days. But recently my job has become a bit flexible over the past few months and it seems my otakuism is interfering. Hit the jump to read on.

Only a few minutes ago the clock struck midnight, and that means its Christmas here in Australia. So Merry Christmas to all my readers and I hope you get lots of presents and eat lots of food. For me this year there will be no presents from anyone but I don’t really mind. The money used to buy presents for family is going to a much GREATER CAUSE and it’s not otaku related either. But it’s something that I have been without for my entire life and something I have been longing for so many years.
Currently I’m on holidays from work for about a week and half so hopefully I have some time to actually get things done for the blog as well as around the house. But more importantly I hope I can also get back into some figure photography. I’m also thinking of organising some kind of Sydney Blogger meet up as I would like to meet some other bloggers and perhaps even some of my readers, but it’s all up in the air for the time being.
So once again Merry Christmas to all. Oh and Yuko in a Christmas outfit is win.

With the end of the Autumn season approaching fast, it’s time to take a look at what is installed for the next season and what will kick off the start of 2009 anime. Its been a while since I did one of these so seeing the line up of shows coming up gets me excited especially since I want to get back into the swing of otaku related activities. All sources come from Moonphase and Animesuki Forums. So here is a list of animes that I will be keeping an eye on:

Maria-sama ga Miteru 4th Season
Air Date: 3rd January
From what I’ve seen of what’s available whilst writing this, by far Marimite is definitely the one series that I look forward to this season. It has been a long time since the OVA series so once again we shall the girls make sure their skirts aren’t disorderly and that their white collars are tidy. And I’m sure I’ll be saying gokigenyou for a while, lol.

Akikan!
Air Date: 3rd January
Based on a shounen comedy romance light novel about juice/soda turning into girls. The cover illustration of the light novels is done by Suzuhira Hiro but I’m not all that convinced by what the official site has to offer. Still the story seems strange, and strange can lead to many things so it has perked my interest somewhat.

Paving my way back into otakuism, it’s a long and slow process since I still have to factor in work in my daily routine. However I think a big leap was taken after the acquisition of an item that has been long sought after for the past 4 years. Being a Da Capo fan has brought many wondrous things but also my craving for more could never be satisfied, and this one item is something I regret not buying when I saw it 4 years ago. But now it’s in my precious collection and I can’t be any happier: Da Capo Visual Fanbook.

This Visual Fanbook covers the original Da Capo game and is quite hard to find anywhere, even in most common places in Akiba. This is also thanks to my friend Nakushita who was one of my comrades on the Japan trip. On the last day wonder around Akiba trying to burn off the remaining yens, I spotted this in K-Books for a mere ¥5,000. Last time I saw this in Japan 4 years ago it was going for ¥11,000 and I wasn’t as cashed up then. However due to buying the Hatsune Miku figma before hand meant I had not enough to buy this thus resigned to giving up on it again. Then along came my friend and he said he’ll buy it knowing that I want it. It’s a common thing we do amongst ourselves.
But later that day he came across an item he wanted and since he spent the last of his yens on the book, I made a deal to buy him his item in return for buying the book when we got home. So after many months (due to us being busy with real life) I finally got my hands on this beauty. The great thing about this item is that it’s pretty much in mint condition and that it contains a mousepad and two drama CDs, all which are still intact and never taken out since brand new.
I would say that my Da Capo collection is now complete with this item but I know that’s lie. A collection is never complete as the yearning for more is always lingering above, but I would say that my collection of Da Capo items has certainly gone to a new level.
