Man, my brothers number one thing he misses from Japan are the vending machines. In America, you don't get that kind of selection, just soda and water mostly. Also, they are everywhere. If you hike up a mountain, theres going to be several at the summit and on the way as well. (: Off Topic: Went to Shirakawago at last today (well yesterday now). Well worth the trip but the train from Nagoya to Takayama has a sporatic schedule (waited 2 hours for one to go home). This is deffinetly not a side trip but a full day trip (even though the expressway is finished and it takes only 50 mins now from Takayama on the bus). It will probably be different for you if you go on the count of you driving. Also, I was shocked to see they spoke English in both Shirakawago and Takayama (: Good to hear you made it to Japan.
