Japan Preparations Phase No.3

Taking a small break from the 7 figures over 7 days series, is just an update with some last preparations for my Japan trip. One of the main reasons for me going back to Japan is because of the whole otakudom, but the second reason is photography. My last trip to Japan had my taking along a very outdated Sony Cybershot camera that didn’t work out all that well. But now that I have more money and a shiny camera, it’s time to head back with no bars.

What you see in the above photo is the following:

  • Canon 400D
  • 18-55mm standard zoom lens
  • 75-300mm telephotic lens
  • 60mm macro lens
  • 10-22mm wide angle lens
  • 580EX II Speedlite.

Of course this is just the majority of the camera equipment I’ll be taking. Have to include other things like batteries, tripod, camera bag, lens hoods, etc. I was actually hoping to pick up another battery for the 400D but I simply didn’t have time to get one. Perhaps I’ll just buy a spare in Japan. Now many of you may have noticed I have one extra thing item that I haven’t mentioned about. Yep, it’s the 10-22mm wide angle lens. I’ve had this for months but never really got a good chance to play around with it, but I have taken some photos before.

This photo is from Supanova Sydney 2008a few months ago with the lens at 10mm. Normally with the 18-55 it would be much more cropped and I wouldn’t have gotten everything in the one picture. Below are some more photos I took about 2 months ago.

Yeah I wasn’t really trying to do anything fancy as I kind of suck at trying to do that. Well it’s more that I think too much into taking photos. Anyway now that I have a wide-angle lens, I’m more than ready to take a lot of photos of Japan and being there for a month gives me the opportunity to raise my photography skills as they have been lacking a lot recently. So lets pray that I take some awesome photos.

Also in the preparation side of things, over the weekend I met up with fellow AnimeSydney member and got his money as he requested a few items for me to search for him. But also I had to exchange my precious gold into yens. Right now I have ¥90,000 which should be more than enough to last me a few days before the need to withdraw cash.

Oh I also managed to acquire tickets to Animelo Saturday concert after all thanks to the help of seiyuu3. I’m actuallyoverly excited about Animelo after seeing theline up for Saturday night as CooRie and yozuca* will be performing. But it’s a shame as I’ve been told by ron~ that cameras aren’t allowed. Well it’s a good thing I have my Canon IXUS 960IS. I’ll get photos somehow!!

So pretty much I’m prepared as much as possible, with the exception of having actually packed anything. I’ll leave that till later tonight, or Thursday night. From the looks of things, I certainly won’t be sleeping the Thursday night.

Oh man, I just remember.
About the EXII speedlite, I finally acquired a 40D for about 6 months now, and there are zero sync problems between it and the camera. Damn you canon!

I suppose the XSi will the same.

plenty of things to bring eh? I’m going to bring only 1 lens and 1 flash with me ^^;

and for advice: don’t exchange money there.. you will get much more if you exchange your money here or in singapore.. or use credit card instead, but there aren’t that many shops accept credit card.. so use it whenever you can :D

Dang thats alot of hardware! (:

I’m not that savy with photography so I just carry my digital one around and take shots on automatic. There not bad pictures but they’ll be no where near as good as the ones you can take with those.

That is absolutely true that it is hard to use a credit card here. In fact, only hotels I’ve seen actually except them (sometimes). Japan is very much a cash society and it is perfectly normal to be walking around with 90,000 yen, heck I’ll be doing that this weekend lol.

Also, I’d like to recommend Himeji Castle. I visited that massive, complete, original castle last weekend. That was the coolest place I’ve been to in Japan by far. Mostly cause I’m into history. Took me 3 hours to see most of the castle and the garden next door. Also, there are LOTS of English speaking guides, so many that I didn’t even take a tour but there was always one around so I got it anyways.

That “fish-eye” lens makes interresting pictures. Will sure be useful for “vacation-photos” :]

ggyaa Animelo. Lucky you ^^
I’ll attempt this for sure… on day… ^^;

Have a nice journey dude!

AOforever1: That comes as no surprised to me. I might look into acquiring a 40D myself but I might wait until the next new thing from Canon. Though the only thing you can’t win against is the auto shutdown feature after doing too many flashes.

ron~: All my money is in the bank and I’ll withdraw only when I need to. I’m well aware of all the factors with money and credit cards in Japan. But where some of the places that my friend is apparently taking us, credit cards are accepted.

Punynari: I just hope I can fit in going to all the places in the 3 days that I’m there for Osaka and Kyoto. But if I start off early I think I might be able to.

lu-k: Interesting photos indeed. But yeah, I’m hella excited about Animelo.

Well Canon doesn’t want too many of their customers sending in flashes for repair :P
Too much work or bad rep for them I suppose.
In another perspective, those paparazzi going crazy with their flashes doesn’t help…

Hey, sorry if it’s too personal, but approximately how much (USD) do you earn a year?

Otaku are not rich… we just allocate a LOT of money into our merchandise expenditures.
Right Adun? :)

Rin: You miscalculated that. It’s 90,000 yen, which is equal to about $900 AUD. This is only enough to start me on the trip but I don’t have anything near $9k. My friends on the other hand……

TnB: I rather not say mainly for personal reasons. But I can say that I should actually be getting paid more than I do now, but given the circumstances that I am in in terms of company and location, it’s actually quite good.

AOforever1: But I am rich, rich in otaku merchandise!!
