Antique Bakery - 01

Opening Sequence:

OP: “Life Goes On ~side K~” by CHEMISTRY

Its seems that the quality in animation for some of the recent new season shows are showing a lot of promise where it seems to take anime to a new level perhaps. The OP sequence reminds me a lot of ufotable’s claymation sequences but cardboard cutouts work better in this type of setting.

Impressions

When I first read what Antique Bakery was about, I assumed it would be one of those series that yaoi fangirls that I see at conventions that never stop shouting their lungs out would watch and that I’d give up after the first episode. But alas I was proven quite wrong in my assumption and what I got was something that was rather enjoyable. Yusuke’s gay behaviour with Keiichiro was done moderately where it never arised until the right moments to bring out much humour in the differences between the two characters, especially Yusuke’s “demonic charm”. I can definitely seeing it arising many times throughout the series.

Animation is handled by Nippon Animation, but co-produced with SynergySP (Hayate no Gotoku) so we can definitely expect top quality throughout the series. The drawing style and colouring suit the style of the series rather well and with the setting based on a bakery with Victorian style funriture they complement each other. Though I have to say that deformed style remind me a lot of the Snoopy comics and it breaks away the whole bishounen look.

Though adding everything together, this really does suit the Noitamina timeslot given that a lot of the series airing during this sequence give off that similar feel. I’m not a fan of the yaoi type of series but Antique Bakery I can probably see not turning out like that at all. It’s just a small factor that fleshes out parts of this series but other aspects have perked my interests so I will most likely continue watching this series. But now after watching this, I feel like cake.

Ending Sequence:

ED: “Life Goes On ~side D~” by CHEMISTRY

The same song as the OP but an entirely different tone to it. The use of puzzle piecesis very artistic and I think that this series itself is quite artistic in it’s drawing style. And damn that cake looks delicious.

    You didn’t mention the cake!
Looks like there’s actually some promise in the show besides everyone’s ‘oh, it’s only going to be yaoi fangirl fodder’ expectations. Now if they cut down on the melodramatic organ music…

issa-sa: If they do moderate the yaoi factor in the series then I would definitely find this an enjoyable series even if I’m not a fan of the yaoi.

Koshiko: Added you to my blogroll. Hooray another Sydney-sider!
