It’s very rare for figures to come as pairs. Sure enough you have the series, but pairs of figures make it more special than say a set of 6. The pair always share a special kind of bond that makes them a whole whether they are fighting for justice, a romantic couple, or even a comedy couple. In essence, you can’t have one figure without the other, and here is a good example of that: Cure Black and Cure White of Pretty Cure.
A few years ago, I would have never thought I would like the mahou shoujo type of shows that are aimed for a younger audience, but once I started watching Pretty Cure, all thanks to Roobar, I found it to be pretty good. I kind of regret not checking out all the Pretty Cure stuff I saw back when the Bandai Museum was still open back in 2005. However, a good friend of mine was selling some of his preloved figures and out of the ones he was selling, he had Cure Black and Cure White.
Out of the two girls, I definitely prefer Cure White (Honaka) but Cure Black (Nagisa) is awesome as well. I prefer Honaka because she has that whole ojou-sama aura around her even though she is just a regular girl. Plus I prefer girl with long hair like hers. The best thing about getting these figures is that they were never opened up by my good friend. The quality of the figures on the otherhand are just below today’s average, but what do you expect from figures released way back in 2004. Either way they are a welcome addition to my collection.
Photography Notes:
Initially I had zero room on the usual table as using two pieces of cardboard proved quite difficult, so I moved out to the living room to do this shoot. Anyway the basis of this shoot was to test the two different color schemes in the one photo, and I’m surprised it has turned out really well as it has. Cure Black was the easiest, but Cure White I had a lot of trouble since her hair is black and using a black background make her hair blend in too well.
Two light sources used, with the stronger one being on Cure Black’s side, and the weaker one on Cure White’s side. No hair light was used as I’ve been getting used to using no hair light in my more recent photos. Minimal photos since it’s hard to find good angles for both of them.

hmm this one is real figurine or trading figurines? looks abit like TF to me o.O and yeah, cure white is better than cure black
I had the idea of doing photo like this also, half black and half white, but haven’t got time to do it
looks nice tho, but somehow the black background looks alot closer than the white one.
ron~: They’re proper 1/8 scale figures. I don’t like putting so much effort into trading figures since they’re not really worth the time. The black background looks closer due to the parallelism of the black and white. Black has that really flat look making it appear very close, where the white background has the shadowing to show that it’s at a distance.
Baggy socks FTW ^^. They look nice, I never knew they released a 1/8 scale version, only thought they came as trading figures. Both of their faces are cute but Nagisa could smile a bit less lol, more scary than cute
Never watched pretty cure but these figures don’t look too bad.
Except maybe the mouth of the black one =/
You did a nice job with the colours of the background.
An update on figure count? lol
Never saw these figures b4.. they look great.. ^^.. I like cure white more too XD
Woho nice grab, this pair is now quite hard to find I guess.
My tastes are a bit the opposite actually ^^ I prefer Nagisa with her rash temper, and have a weakness toward short red-haired anime girls (like Nami from One Piece too).
This background setting is just great! Very good inspiration!
AS: These were released by MegaHouse, and are quite old. I was totally surprised to find my friend selling them and I grabbed them up straight away. Nagisa’s smile is pretty awesome, shows that energetic nature of her’s.
Bubby: You should watch Pretty Cure, so full of mahou shjou awesomeness. As for figure count I’m not too sure. I’ll have to do a recount soon.
Prim3: Cure White is indeed the best.
lu-k: Although I personally like Honoka more, Nagisa is the funniest and more active of the two and she brings balance to Honoka’s character. But yeah, background reflects the two characters, you can’t have one without the other.
Interesting background setting, Hmmm have never seen these two figures but they are kinda nice, Cure White is cute
^^ <– Website ain’t working yet fyi.
But yeah, I was browsing here when I saw the figures. Pretty cure is currently on my fav anime list. I never knew there were figures ;O That’s awesome.
I saw these(in stock!!)on a site recently. And was thinking about getting them. I would get Cure Black first, I do love long haired girls. But there is something about short hair too… altho the mouth on Black puts me off…
