It certainly has been a long time since the Clannad movie had aired in cinemas in Japan, but for those of us who don’t live in Japan we have to wait for the DVD release. I remember waiting eagerly for the Air movie DVD release to come out yet it didn’t feel as long as compared to the Clannad movie. Well lucky for us, the Clannad movie DVD release was in fact 4 days ago and these arrived at my doorstep early this morning:

Well I certainly leanrt a lesson from buying the Air Movie DVDs. At first I bought only the special edition but then wanted the Collectors Edition so badly that by the time I went looking for one, they were sold out on Amazon Japan. This time around I ordered both Collectors and Special Edition of Clannad. Similar to that of the Air Movie release, the Collectors and Special editions are covered in a transparent paper which can be easily damaged. So be careful when taking out the contents of the box.

Upon removing the paper covering, this is what you see. The box graphic actually circles around the box but you’ll see the full image in the next two photos. Ah Nagisa is so cute.

First up is the Special Edition. Contents of the Special Edition include the Clannad movie DVD itself, a Bonus DVD that mainly contains all the promo clips from both TV spots and cinema previews and it all adds up to about 24 minutes worth, and the last item is a voice CD titled “Furukawa-san chi futatabi” which I’m too lazy to translate, lol.

Lastly is the Collectors Edition. Again the contents are the Clannad movie DVD, a vocal CD titled “dango dango dango” that runs for 44 minutes, a very THICK booklet that contains the manuscript for the Clannad movie as well as the storyboarding illustrations, and lastly a telephone card.
To be frank, I’m kind of not overly excited about the extras that come with the Collectors Edition. I felt the same way when I actually managed to purchase the Air Movie in Japan, however the Air Movie is a bit more special since I bought it at Comiket 69 and got other free goodies with it, but it just seems that the Collectors Edition is lacking something that separates it from the Special Edition. Perhaps if it came with a mousepad, or a pencilboard I’d probably be content with it then. Though I’m not one to complain since there is a slight twist in acquiring the Collectors Edition.
The Collectors Edition can be bought here from Amazon Japan, but if any of you are actually aware, there are some items that cannot be shipped outside of Japan. This Collectors Edition just happens to be one of those items. I’m not entirely sure why it has been labeled as such BUT I have actually found a loophole in Amazon Japan’s ordering system that happened to let me add this item and have it shipped. Of course I could have been lucky but I’m willing to test it again when the time comes for me to place another Amazon Japan order.
Anyway, back to the DVDs, the Collectors and Special Edition of Clannad isn’t exactly something spectacular. Though I’m sure most people would be waiting for a fansubbed version, but for the fans who actually buy the R2 releases, you’re probably better off purchasing the Special or even Regular Edition if you don’t want to spend too much. For the hardcore people out there, I hope you can get your hands on the Collectors Edition just like I have.
- Clannad Movie Collectors Edition - ¥7,840
- Clannad Movie Special Edition - ¥6,512
- Clannad Movie Regular Edition - ¥5,032

I’d probably get the collector’s edition just for the sake of getting a copy of the manuscript and storyboards.

Will you tell us about that loophole once you confirm it works? :>
I wonder when subs of this will come out.
Also, I wish amazon.jp would allow more things to be shipped out of Japan because they have some pretty good prices and the ability to buy all my merchandise from one place would make things so much more convenient.

Zeroblade: I like your style of thinking
.tomi: That I will, so lets pray they haven’t fixed it anytime soon.
Honya: Buying from one place would definitely be better as you would save on shipping quite a bit. There are a lot of things I would like to buy off Amazon Japan but due to the bar on shipping of particular items, I won’t acquire them anytime soon.
Your urge to buy two versions of the same DVD is scary O_o If I were to get one, I would probably get the Collector’s edition since I want the manuscript of the movie. I’m not jumping yet though - waiting for a sub group to sub the movie since I heard that it was somewhat average compared to the TV series; kinda like the AIR movie (in my opinion, of course). m(_ _)m Glad I watched the movie before I clicked the buy button on Amazon Japan’s site at the time.
If you ever get around to watching the Clannad movie, make sure you blog it!! =)
It really is a shame that the Special edition didn’t turn out to be a BD release as was initially intended. I would have bought it for the sole purpose of having Clannad in HD, but alas with what’s being offered now, I doubt I will even consider buying either edition. That and all the somewhat average reviews I have read thus far.
I think if I’d had to choose, I’d buy the collectors version. The manuscript seems to be worth the money.
oh goodness, they look beautiful! If I had the money, I’d definitely buy both
Lunatic_Sae: Yeah I tend to surprise people quite often with my spending habits. Personally myself I would never compare a movie to the actual TV series. Many people did exactly that with AIR, yet I watched it without comparing the two and in fact, I loved the movie much more than the TV series. Well hopefully I can get around to watching the movie, so busy these days.
boggart: I originally though the Collectors Edition was going to be BD. Even though I don’t have a DB player, I’d still buy it
alafista: Seems like most people would like a copy of the manuscript.
nomnomnom: I bought both because I’m too otaku to only have one, lol.
Picked up the Collectors Edition on amazon.jp as well. Didn’t feel for the Special Edition though.
I also got the Collectors Edition. -100 points to Frontier Works for killing off the Blu-ray disc, especially given the fuzziness of the DVD transfer.
The film itself was splendid, though.
Carl: Fuzziness? That doesn’t sound very good, lol. Guess I’ll find out once I have the chance to actually watch the movie.
kkaaawwaaaiiiiiiiii!!!!!so cute!!!!!!the part they song dango 2gether. the ending so nice and make me cry..i love the ending ofthis movie..
