The Best and Worst Anime Awards for 2007

December 31, 2007 | Author: | In: Anime Blogs, Series Review

With this being the last day for 2007, I figured it’s time to turn around and take a look back at the good and bad that we went through in 2007. This year is also different for me as it’s the first full year where I have done a full year of blogging, and despite having a full time job halfway through the year, I still managed to watch a decent amount of series. The conditions for the winners of each of these awards are simple:

  • The series must have aired in 2007.
  • If a series has transitioned from last year to this year, majority of the episodes must have screened in 2007.
  • I must have watched the show.
  • If a show is transitioning from this year to next year, it will not be considered for this year’s awards. (yeah I changed the rule compared to last year)
  • It can be either a TV series or OVA

Though every time I think about what series deserve each award, I find it rather difficult since I go by the motto of watch and forget. That is unless I found the series to be HIGHLY enjoyable or it turned out to be pretty epic. So without further ado…..

Best Action & Best Mecha – Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann

To quote my friend Sithboy “just when you thought the series had hit a pinnacle of epic, the next episode just makes it MORE EPIC!!”. Really, I couldn’t put it in any other way as Gurren Lagann had the best fight scenes that I have seen all year round. It’s mixture of sharp mecha designs, never ending explosions during a fight, and themes of believing in yourself has made this series into something that is beyond awesome in terms of action.

Runner Ups: Code Geass, Darker Than Black

Best Animation – Byousoku 5cm

No doubt in my mind that this was definitely the most beautiful anime that I have seen. With Makoto Shinkai proving with previous works such as Hoshi no Koe (Voices of a Distant Star) and Kumo no Mukou, Yakusoku no Basho (The Place Promised in Our Early Days), he has once again shown us that there is a higher plane in the level of animation quality. Every single little detailed from the falling sakura petals, the launching of the rocket, to just a regular train station, every little detail was not skipped. And heck, who else could make a McDonalds meal look so good?

Runner Ups: Maria-sama ga Miteru OVA, Tsubasa Chronicle OVA Episode 1

Best Comedy – Minami-ke

I can honestly say that 2007 sure had quite a number of comedy shows out there, but Minami-ke has to stand out from the rest. Every episode has made me laugh so much that I actually missed parts whilst still laughing. Lucky Star was a real good contender for this award, although I found the series to be funny, a lot of the jokes came from the otaku side of things, which strangely enough I can almost relate to. So Minami-ke to me is something outside that realm of otakuism, plus it had better running gags. And really, who can beat a trap such as Mako-chan, the reverse trap Touma, and the fish hugging undresser Hosaka?

Runner Ups: Lucky Star, Hayate no Gotoku

Best Drama – Touka Gettan

This award I would have to say was the hardest one to decide. But Touka Gettan’s unique style of playing the series backwards, but also the various style it used to play out particular episodes was just astonishing. The portrayal of scenes such as Momoka’s bullying, to the underlying history of all the characters through such means as the live play, or the black and white episode made me appreciate the series quite a lot. Sure enough there were a lot of one off comedy type episodes, but I think the later part of the series showed what Touka Gettan was really about.

Runners Up: Nodame Cantabile, Romeo x Juliet

Best Slice of Life – ARIA The OVA ~ ARIETTA~

No doubt in my mind that this is the best slice of life for 2007. Out of all the other slice of life shows, nothing can match ARIA for it’s beauty, it’s view on life, and the circle of friendship that surround Akari. From the present, we take a step back into the past, as well as have a glimmer into the future, but the one important thing it brought to us was the appreciation of the present. Akari’s pure heartedness and innocence is what made this OVA shine above all else.

Runner Ups: Sketchbook ~full color’S~, Hidamari Sketch

Best Male Character – Kamina

Although his time in Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann was for a short time, he was definitely the manliest of men for 2007. His strong mottos of not “believe the me that believes in you” and “kicking reason to the curb” is the pinnacle of how a man should be. Not to mention his death was also one of the saddest, yet greatest death for 2007 in which I cried MANLY tears over.

Runner Ups: Lelouch Lamperoug (Code Geass)
Best Female Character – Shiho Matsuri (sola)

There were so many wonderful female characters, but a combination of Nanao Naru character design, the voice of Mamiko Noto, and with such a playful, yet teasing personality, Matsuri has won my heart for 2007. Her fight for survival shows that she is a strong woman, but what made her stronger was her choice to sacrifice herself in order to save Aono. But really, her playful, yet adultish nature is what really shines with Matsuri.

Runner Ups: Hiiragi Kagami (Lucky Star), Katsura Hinagiku (Hayate no Gotoku)

Best Music (includes both soundtrack & OP/ED) – ef – a tale of memories

Having only finished the series yesterday, there was no doubt from the beginning that ef had the best music for 2007. The music of Tenmon was just absolutely brilliant in how it fleshed out the themes portrayed through the series and with the mixture of abstraction and dark colours, it made the series itself quite powerful in itself. Each of the girl’s ending themes were just so awesome and I consider Chihiro’s ending theme to be the most powerful one of all.

Runner Ups: Lucky Star

Best Anime for 2007 – sola

Just like the Japanese, sola for me was the best series I have seen this year. To me, sola was a series that I had no idea about other than it had Nanao Naru (Da Capo, Canvas 2) as the original character design, and a story written by Hisaya Naoki (main writer for Kanon), but it grew into something that I loved and after each episode, I yearned for more. With such a cast of unique characters (not to mention some lovely female characters), an original story, and my love for all things Nanao Naru and Key, no doubt in my mind, and heart, that this is the best series for me for 2007.

Runner Ups: Code Geass,

So that concludes the Best Anime Awards. Of course these are just my opinions and some people may agree with what I have chosen, others may disagree. Anyway, onwards to the Worst Anime Awards for 2007.

Worst Animation – Shinkyoku Soukai Polyphonica

Really, after 2006′s Cabbage Love, I couldn’t fathom that anything could be as bad as that. However I was proven wrong upon the first 10 minutes of the first episode of Polyphonica. It really boggles my mind on how Ginga-ya managed to turn this series into something terrible, especially since they animated Shinigami no Ballad. Not to mention that the CG for Polyphonica is just awesome, I only wished the series was similar in style to that.

Runner Ups: Doujin Work

Worst Story – Shuffle! Memories

Although this is the worst story, but in essence, there was no story to begin with. A whole 12 episodes that were pretty much a recollection of the original series. Luckily I gave up after the first episode, but I skimmed through the rest of the 11 only to see if there were any new content.

Runner Ups: Kono Aozora ni Yakusoku wo

Worst Character Designs – Heroic Age

To be honest, I actually enjoyed watching Heroic Age, but I just couldn’t get over the fact that the characters pretty much look exactly the same as Gundam SEED and Gundam SEED Destiny characters and it pissed me off to no end. Really Hirai Hisashi really needs to their character design style.

Most Anti-Climatic Series – Zero no Tsukaima ~ Futatsuki no Kishi~

I was hoping Zero no Tsukaima to turn out as wonderful as the first season. However then overall series just didn’t have that oophm that was present in the first season. The ending to the second season wasn’t exactly all that great either with Saito pulling a deus ex machina on us and the series focused a lot on Agnes side of things. I can only hope that the announced 3rd season will do better than the second.

Most Boring Series – Saint October

I only managed to watch what it was subbed up to, but god damn I found this series to be utterly boring, even if the premise of the story was magical gothic loli girls. However I just get over the fact that the series just didn’t seem to go anywhere.

Runner Ups: Getsumen Toheiki Miina

Most Dragged Out Series – Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha StrikerS

At the start of the series, I thought it turned out quite well with the introduction of new characters. But little did I realise with the sheer size of the cast of characters that the show started to turn a well beloved franchise into something that felt like a chore to watch. All those training episodes just made the series go on and on, but also with the whole administrative feel to the series, it loses the essence, the passion of what Nanoha and Nanonha A’s was about. Magical loli girls battling it out in full force.

Most Annoying Character – Zenigata Mawari (Seto no Hanayome)

Seto no Hanayome was a series that I found pretty enjoyable, even though I dropped blogging it after 10 episodes, however THE most annoying character would have to be Mawari. Her whole shouting out about “teaching the rules of society” and her constant snooping into others just got on my nerves.

Runner Ups: Ito Makoto (School Days), Oribe Aoi (Myself ; Yourself)

Worst Anime for 2007 – Shuffle! Memories

No doubt about this one. A recap of the first series is nothing more than just milking the series from all the otakus out there. And something like this just ruins one of the best eroge to anime series of 2006.

So now that 2007 is at an end, it was quite a fun year in which we saw some awesome series, and some disappointing series as well. I can only speculate what 2008 will bring to use, but seeing what the Winter 2008 lineup has for us, it’s not off to a very good start. But at least we still have the continuing series from Fall season so all is not lost. Remember, all of these are just my personal opinions, what do you consider to be the good and bad of 2007?

Personally, I thought that Simon kicked more ass than Kamina did. But the fact is both of them equally awesome, each special in their own ways.

I cannot find any reason to disagree with Kamina being the best male character. He is the embodiment of manliness and GAR.
I personally thought that StrikerS tried to take the series in a different direction, but the fans just preferred it A’s style. Or something.

uh another surprise. I mean it’s maybe the third anime ranking in a blog I read. everybody post different animes. most I’ve never heard well this is the first one I see with almost equal anti awards than real awards ( 8:9 ).
Well for Best anime I was surprise again. I didn’t expect someone to liked sola that much. I mean in my country nobody likes it… But yeah Matsuri for the win :). I don’t get what so good about Lucky Star Music. btw ef is first there :) so no problems with that :).
Others I’ve just didn’t watched them so no comments.

Best animation and best slice of life I agree on. There’s just something magical about Makoto Shinkai’s works and Aria is just great, always puts me in a good mood.

double: Personally I do think they are on equal grounds, but probably because Simon had a larger development from being a wimp, to being all GAR.

Zeroblade: A different direction yes, I felt that as well. But I think the overall administrative feel to it ruins StrikerS as there were so many formalities in front of everything than seeing every being just friends.

PCgamer: Everyone has their different opinions on the different types of anime series out there. For me, my preference is all the moe/harem type of anime, but I do enjoy watching other types as well, so I do try to get a variety of things under my wing. sola for me was just something more special as I knew that it was going to be good right from the start, but it blew beyond my own expectations of how much I would love it.

lustrous realm: Oh but I have watched Lovely Complex.I indeed found that funny but it just escaped my mind. I had kind a lot of trouble trying to remember what I have actually watched throughout the year as my watch list is fairly large.

Wow my friend you watch more anime than I do =O! Haha yeah Shuffle! Memories was *ehem*.

Yes Kamina is the man of the year by far. Matsuri deserves to win, too. I also like Eika Ichijo from Sky Girls =).

This all seems pretty fair and well reasoned to me. Unlike Epic Win it looks like you did you’re research and aren’t influenced to much by trends and the need to use memes in lieu of thoughtful prose. Your picks are quite different then most I’ve seen, so this was quite an interesting read. Keep up the good work.

PS: You’re picks for Best Action and Mecha were the same as mine.:P

This is one of the more interesting lists I’ve seen. I like how you forgo sensationalism of the variety that Epic Win Blog used in their awards, aren’t too caught up in popular trends, did your research and didn’t really on memes in lieu of thoughtful prose. You show an appreciation for a wide variety of genres and keep a positive attititude even when talking about your worst series pick. Keep up the good work.

By the way, your Best Action/Mecha Series picks are the same as mine.

What about Lelouch did anybody watch really watch Code Geass, he was a sociopath and a maniac and you couldn’t take your eyes off of him. I couldn’t even decide whether Lelouch was good or bad, thats how deep his character was, until i just gave up and watched because he was interesting, fuck Sola what the hell, Code Geass best anime, Lelouch best male character, Kallen best female character, Code Geass across the board, yea Kamina is competetion but he died so early, Lelouch has to be it. Cant wait for the revolution part II. The Black Knights shall rise again.

June 25th, 2008 at 3:58 pm

i totally agree with “Zero”, none of you must have watched Code Geass. It got a lot of awards and Lelouch (the main character) won the “most popular male character of 06/07″ at Animage magazine’s Anime Grand Prix.

Figure Review: Shihou Matsuri at Moé Moé Rabu

[...] the figures I purchased for 2007. So hit the jump to check out photos of what I consider to be the best female character of 2007, Solid Works Shihou [...]

October 15th, 2008 at 7:49 am

Yeag , i also agree with the above. Code Geass is certainly the best anime. Well should be for 2008
I found out 2nd series are more enjoyable and interesting then the 1st one. Lelouch is no doubt best male
character. His character was so deep and the fact that he make himself become symbol of hated and sacrifice himself for the sake of the world should beat every male character !!
