ef – a tale of memories – 11

By the end of this episode, I was a little surprised at the turn of events, but it was also expected as we needed some kind of twist to the story in hope to make it through two episodes. So they spent an entire day being lovers and going on a date, yet I think this is a reason why Chihiro kept holding Renji back from reading the ending of the novel. She wanted to enjoy her time with Renji one last time before the time came for her to forget about Renji.

Impressions

Although I do have mixed thoughts on the decision that Chihiro made. I can see her point about her memory condition, over time Renji will become in pain as he would have to deal with Chihiro’s breakdown as we saw back in episode 8 everyday. Seeing someone you love become like that everyday will not only cause them a cut deeper than heart break, but a cut that goes so deep that it could possibly bring him to a mental breakdown. However on the other side of the coin, it feels to me that Chihiro is running away from Renji rather than protecting him from such pain. Her daily exercise of having to read her diary will only gradually cause herself pain as she will know at the end of each day, she will forget everything and will start again from nothing. Thus she makes it easier on herself by destroying the one thing that is important to her other than being with Renji, and that is the diary of memories of Renji.

With Chihiro’s story based on her life and her condition, I find it rather surprising that she didn’t burn the diary like she burned the paintings in the story. It would have been a more effective way of destroying her memories, but her throwing them away does shine a glimmer of hope for her to remember just yet. Well at least the flying paper in Chihiro’s ending sequence makes sense now. Also who found it more amusing that Chihiro had her clothes folded neatly than finding out that they had sex? Well it’s very Chihiro like to be all neat and stuff.

With one episode to go, I’m really interested in how their story will end. Unless Renji causes some miracle in Chihiro and cures her of her memory disorder, I can’t really speculate anything at this point. Also they hinted a bit about Yu’s waiting for a particular person, and with the stained glass painting of Yuuko, I can still only hope they show something about them. But given that the last episode will focus on Renji and Chihiro, I find it highly unlikely.
