The Best and Worst Anime Awards for 2007

With this being the last day for 2007, I figured it’s time to turn around and take a look back at the good and bad that we went through in 2007. This year is also different for me as it’s the first full year where I have done a full year of blogging, and despite having a full time job halfway through the year, I still managed to watch a decent amount of series. The conditions for the winners of each of these awards are simple:

  • The series must have aired in 2007.
  • If a series has transitioned from last year to this year, majority of the episodes must have screened in 2007.
  • I must have watched the show.
  • If a show is transitioning from this year to next year, it will not be considered for this year’s awards. (yeah I changed the rule compared to last year)
  • It can be either a TV series or OVA

Though every time I think about what series deserve each award, I find it rather difficult since I go by the motto of watch and forget. That is unless I found the series to be HIGHLY enjoyable or it turned out to be pretty epic. So without further ado…..

Best Action & Best Mecha - Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann

To quote my friend Sithboy “just when you thought the series had hit a pinnacle of epic, the next episode just makes it MORE EPIC!!”. Really, I couldn’t put it in any other way as Gurren Lagann had the best fight scenes that I have seen all year round. It’s mixture of sharp mecha designs, never ending explosions during a fight, and themes of believing in yourself has made this series into something that is beyond awesome in terms of action.

Runner Ups: Code Geass, Darker Than Black

Best Animation - Byousoku 5cm

No doubt in my mind that this was definitely the most beautiful anime that I have seen. With Makoto Shinkai proving with previous works such as Hoshi no Koe (Voices of a Distant Star) and Kumo no Mukou, Yakusoku no Basho (The Place Promised in Our Early Days), he has once again shown us that there is a higher plane in the level of animation quality. Every single little detailed from the falling sakura petals, the launching of the rocket, to just a regular train station, every little detail was not skipped. And heck, who else could make a McDonalds meal look so good?

Runner Ups: Maria-sama ga Miteru OVA, Tsubasa Chronicle OVA Episode 1

Winter 2008 Season Preview

With the Fall 2007 season finally over, it’s time to take a look at what the new year, or more specifically what the new season will bring us. Having a look through Moonphase and moetron, this Winter season doesn’t have a lot to offer compared to Fall season. Also not to mention that some series have already started, but I’ll see whether I can catch up on those series or not. Also since the season’s list appears to be very small, my selection of what to blog will also be very small since I already have the continuing series from the Fall season such as Clannad, and Bamboo Blade, and Hayate no Gotoku is still going.

  Ah Megami-sama! Tatakau Tsubasa
Air Date: 8th December

This is the third season, well technically it’s an OVA, of the AMG series which I love. Although it has been aired already, I have yet to watch it so I do hope I can get around to watching it.
Blogging: Maybe

  H20 ~FOOTPRINTS IN The SAND~
Air Date: 3rd January

H20 ROCKS YOUR SOUL! Seriously, when I saw the promo clip on Random Curiosity, I was like WTF. Well this is another visual novel turned anime, but I actually like the original artwork from the game, plus the protagonist this time is a blind guy.

ef - a tale of memories - 12

With the last episode ending with a twist, I was hoping for something dramatic to happen in order for Chihiro to remember Renji, so I’m a little disappointed in which Chihiro had not forgotten about Renji at all. But as the saying goes, it’s not th result that matters, it’s the journey. Renji’s state of depression over Chihiro’s choice to forget him I believe is better than say Hirono’s choice of having to chose between Kei and Miyako, and much more dramatic. But I also believe that Renji’s resolve and the advice that he received had a better effect than Hirono’s as well.

ef - a tale of memories - 11

By the end of this episode, I was a little surprised at the turn of events, but it was also expected as we needed some kind of twist to the story in hope to make it through two episodes. So they spent an entire day being lovers and going on a date, yet I think this is a reason why Chihiro kept holding Renji back from reading the ending of the novel. She wanted to enjoy her time with Renji one last time before the time came for her to forget about Renji.

ef - a tale of memories - 10

Wow, has there ever been an episode where it was entirely focused on the Hirono x Miyako x Kei side of things? Probably not but this episode was superb in a way that actually wrapped everything up pretty quickly. They were able to wrap up Hirono’s relationship between him and Kei by wanting to go back to a time of when they were enjoying themselves, but also made it concrete that Hirono has chosen Miyako to stay by his side. Although that was pretty obvious since he did end up sleeping with her. Heck they even managed to wrap up Hirono’s choice about his future.

Clannad - 10

After such a beautiful ending to the Fuko arc, I was wondering how they were going to go from her arc onto Kotomi’s arc, but KyoAni have done a wonderful job on moving the series forward. At the start, we get the usual warm and friendly welcomes in the morning, but it’s nice to see that Tomoya is still calling Nagisa by her first name. Although they have forgotten about Fuko, thye haven’t forgotten their feelings for Fuko at all, which is a nice touch. Still, I wonder if we’ll see Fuko make another appearance towards the end of the series, much like Makoto when she appeared in the end of Kanon.

Sketchbook ~full color’S~ - 11

Sketchbook has a running theme about friendship, either in the human world, or in the cat world, but this episode hits it nail right on the head. Sora ended up catching a cold had to stay home to rest. Throughout the day she was bored and feeling rather lonely, but by the end of the day, her friends came by to see how she was. Although it’s a recurring thing that you see in most anime, but it feels that Sketchbook makes that kind of thing more special and much more appreciated. Everyone had brought gifts in hope for Sora to get better, and with these gifts, Sora knows that she isn’t alone and is happy with everyone’s feelings. Even Ryo and Fuu came by to drop off a gift.
