Mobile Suit Gundam 00 - 01

Opening Sequence:

OP: “DAYBREAK’S BELL” by L’Arc~en~Ciel

It’s been a while since I listened to a L’Arc~en~Ciel song, and for one to be used as a Gundam OP is somewhat different. However I don’t feel the same kind of punch like in the SEED and SEED Destiny OPs.

Impressions

At first I was kind of skeptical about the new Gundam series since SEED and SEED Destiny was just full of fail, but it seems that Gundam 00 has taken a slightly different direction. This time around, we see all the Gundams on the same side for once and they are all piloted by the good guys for once, which gives us a nice start, but it also lacks that slight twist that we would normally see in a Gundam series. Personally I thought we would see a Gundam get stolen in the first episode, but perhaps we’ll see something like that happening later.

The animation has also taken a different direction as Hirai Hisashi is not the character designer this time around, which I think is a good thing. I was getting pretty tired of seeing the similarities in the character designs in some of the Bandai series so this gives Gundam 00 a fresh look. Even though I say it’s different, I can’t determine if I like it or hate it. With the Gundam designs, I can’t really say too much now since most Gundams alsmost look the same. Right now I think Exia looks almost like Strike at this point. Oh how I miss Gundam series like the original Gundam and Zeta series.

A rather slow start to the series, but since it’s the first episode, it’s only a basic character introduction, even though they each had minor appearances. The premise of the story this time around is different in which the Gundams are being used to stop war, rather than being used for war. Wait, how can that be?? Anyway, just like Konata’s dad said in Lucky Star, since I’ve watched the other Gundam series, I’m kind of obliged to watch this new one as well. That isn’t to say that I won’t enjoy watching Gundam 00, but I’m still expecting some aspects to show up in this series as it has in other Gundam series. Likea Gundam being stolen, one of the pilot’s best friend/lover gets killed and they go all NewType/SEED mode, we have two Gundams fighting each other because of said person was killed. What I do hope is that we don’t see shiny Gundams at the end of a massive fight at the very end of the series.

Well I shall continue to watch, but it’s not a series I would want to blog.

Ending Sequence:

ED: “Wana” by THE BACK HORN

Again the ED doesn’t impress me too much as it still seems to be missing that punch that other Gundam series had. But I do like how the ED sequence plays out as it focuses on the 4 Gundam pilots.

I actually thought the OP was a great change of pace from the typical techno music Seed used. GS and GSD slowly got that emo feeling in every episode; Gundam 00 however has a slightly of not significantly difference feeling to it. Very refreshing! Episode 02 however, somewhat goes back to the “emo” side. You’ll see what I mean if you haven’t already. Did I mention Setsuna might be related to School Days somehow? lol

I’m glad that I’m not the only one that didn’t like Seed or Destiny ^^. I too had my own skepticism about watching 00 after seeing Seed. So when I actually enjoyed watching the first episode I decided I would keep watching until its over or I’m disappointed enough to drop it.
