Impressions
With the last two shows that I blogged being complete flops, it was time to move onto and next up was Kaiji. All I can say is this is bloody awesome. Having watched Akagi and loved every bit of it, I was looking forward to Kaiji, but with this only being the first episode, it’s too early to say if this will be at the level of awesomeness that Akagi was at. The one thing that turns most people away from a series like this is the artwork. Even I admit the artwork is downright crap, but in a way it suits the dark overtone of the series, and it actually makes the bad guys look like bad guys.
As an initial impression, Kaiji I think is a bit of a coward, but I think we’ll be seeing him change over the course of the series. Whether he’ll win through the cruise with pure skill or extreme luck, we’ll be in for one heck of a thriller. I don’t expect Kaiji to be on the same level as Akagi, but I think we’ll definitely see him grow and become something big, or at least grow confidence in himself.
Mad House is taking the lead on the animation here, despite the crap artwork, we can definitely see them fleshing out the world of gambling and the evil big nosed overlords and I think they’ll bring us something awesome. The OP and ED sequences go well as it brings out the life that Kaiji has, or will be living. The grungy kind of music goes well with the sequences, and although I didn’t pay much attention to the BGM, we’ll be hearing some gloomy and dark type of music.
A show that’ll definitely go on the watch list, though unsure if I want to blog this as I’m still nowhere near halfway through the new season. Though I don’t think I will blog this unless I see something pure awesome.

Zawa zawa!
Glad to find a fellow Akagi/Kaiji fan. I agree that while the art style turns a lot of people off, once you get used to it it really adds to the gritty vibe of the shows.
Also, as somebody who’s read some of the Kaiji manga, let me just say that while Kaiji is no Akagi, he does have a pretty GAR side to him.
I enjoyed Akagi and i think i’ll like this series too!
Sadly, i would still prefer Akagi since i’m quite a mahjong player over any other gambling games (i just can’t play poker)
Hiyuu….I agree about the poker part, but I assure you I’m far worse. If anyone had asked me my hand, I would’ve told them “um…I got 21 black clovers, 10 hearts, 4 diamonds, and a black jack. Wait, black jack? does that mean I win? As for Kaiji’s art, I actually embrace it’s peculiar style, and it kind of reminded me when I first watched Hajime no Ippo after watching all those “pretty” animes. Completely opened up my eyes about a kick ass storyline overcoming awkward art style any day.
