For quite some time now I have been brooding over getting a 22″ wide screen monitor. At work we have a few, but I got stuck with a 19″ wide screen. Today being the weekend, I had nothing planned. I got paid and I thought I should buy something. So drove all the way to Auburn to get myself a brand new monitor from MSY.
Originally I wanted the BenQ FP222W, but unfortunately they sold out. Luckily they still had the Chimei CMV221D in stock, which is just as good. With a resolution of 1680×1050, it’s large enough for me as I really just wanted a larger workspace when doing all my random things from image editing, watching anime, chatting etc. Though it doesn’t cover 1080p, but meh, I’d by a proper TV if I wanted to do that.

Best thing about this, this monitor only costs me $329 AUD. I remember that these were going for a mint when they first came out, but I was poor and jobless then, lol. I was actually juggling between getting this or a new lens for my shiny camera, but I think the next paycheck shall be the new lens. Normally I’d be saving my money for a Japan trip, but that’s not going ahead anymore. Perhaps next year.
So after spending a good two hours rearranging my desk, the monitor was up and running. I somewhat underestimated the amount of space it’ll be taking up, but I am surprised it fits just nicely. The original plan was to have 3 LCD monitors on the desk, but alas my tower takes up too much room under my desk. Why 3 monitors? Because it would be awesome, and two monitors is never enough for development work. I’ve sampled a few episodes of anime and MY GOD, the difference in my field of vision. But I do notice now with a larger resolution, nearly everything I watched is stretched when full screen. But matters not, something that fills my field of vision is good enough for me.
One thing I noted about this Chimei monitor, I know others who also own the same one and they say that it’s so bright, they have to turn down the brightness. To me it’s fine, but I think I may have to lower the brightness so I don’t burn away my retinas. Anyway, this is my first BIG purchase since I started working and there’ll be other BIG purchases later on in the future. I might even buy another wide screen monitor!

22″ is really nice.
CMV is one of the cheapest LCD with good quality, I always recommend that monitor to my friends.
yah too bad that the monitor isn’t HDCP ready.., btw what’s the maximum resolution? 24″ can do 1920×1200.

ron~: If I got the BenQ FP222H, it has HDMI input availble, but too bad most of the general computer parts retailers don’t stock stuff like that. The native resolution of most 22″ is 1860×1050, but yeah, wish i could get a 24″, but I don’t think it’s worth spending an extra $500-$700 for the extra 2″.
Zeroblade: I’ve had to do with a 17″ and 15″ for the past 4 years, so it was time for a change.
I envy you, that you can be like “I got paid today and felt like buying something so I got a 22 inch monitor”. If only…!

Very nice man. I got for myself a 22 inch Samsung 226bw 1680×1050, and it’s awesome! I really happy with it. the only thing that is worse than my last monitor(17inch LCD), is that low quality anime episodes look a lot worse becuase the screen is larger. but hey, 720p or 1080p looks stunning. it has this depth and 3D like image which is beyond beautiful!. and dual screen is useful. I can’t do it myself(the old screen died), but maybe in the future. have fun mate!

icie: Only reason this can happen is that my trip to Japan for Winter Comiket has now been canceled. So I can have a bit more freedom in spending, but in the meantime, I shall start saving for Summer Comiket next year.

Kouji: Definitely loving the workspace. I can do so much more in Photoshop but also view the photos at a larger resolution.

Got myself a 22″ Samsung recently, but has additional HDMI, Component, S-Video and composite inputs as well as picture in picture/picture by picture goodness

oOgA: Personally I don’t think it’s worth me paying $1000 for a 24″. Like I said before, if I want full 1080p, I rather save a lot more and get a proper HDTV. My room is neat because it is relatively small. I try not to clutter it too much else it’ll be a nightmare finding stuff.

What kind of graphic card are you using? (people also tend to get a fairly powerful one in order to get the most out of their Wide-screens & DVI signal.)

Windbell: That we do! Yet I’;m sure your eyes are probably burnt out by now from the sheer brightness of the monitor.
ATB: Currently I’m running 2 6600GT. Although they are bridged for SLI, I’m currently not running SLI. So the two monitors are using one card each. So technically I could run 4 monitors if I want.
