Now what kind of convention would it be if it weren’t for cosplayers? Then my shiny camera would be pretty much useless. Luckily there was a moderate amount of cosplayers that attended SMASH, and having also bought a 2 GB CompactFlash card that morning, I was armed and ready. So hit the jump to check out a whole 64 pictures of the cosplayers and the Madman Cosplay Competition. WARNING: Picture intensive post.

The pictures of the cosplay competition I took from the second floor with a 75-300mm telephotic lens. Also I probably took these from a bad angle because the judge is sitting in the background. Well can’t be helped since other places were taken up. No comments from me about the cosplayers and I can’t be assed to name the characters.

Cosplay was average here, though I did wish I took photos of the maids from the maid cafe. Oh well, I’ll just go to Japan and experience a maid cafe there. Here at SMASH I didn’t find the cosplayers that great, heck even the people yukata were looking better. But still, cosplayers do spend time making their costumes and I respect that. I know how long and how much effort it takes because I’ve cosplayed before.
Now one thing I didn’t like about the competition was mainly the MC’s. Now having a Phoenix Wright type of competition is good and all, but when they are shouting really loudly into a microphone, yeah…. it’s not exactly pleasant to the ears. Not to mention one of the MC’s also swore, which I do find a little inappropriate for a public event such as this. And as mentioned before, the judge in the background is a bit of an eyesore for photos, and I wished he was seated somewhere else.
Now if you are a cosplayer and reading this. Please next time you go on stage for the competition, stand still for at least 10 seconds at the front so people can take photos. Not easy when people are moving around so much as it makes it rather difficult to take photos.
So with Animania only 5-6 weeks away, I’m praying I have much better equipment. So look forward to seeing my photos for Animania Sydney 2007.
If you want any of the photos above in high-res versions, please email me at adunATmoemoerabu.net

Nice photos.
Yeah, they didn’t pose long enough for the cameras, so I moved and took my photos to the side of the stage, as the cosplayers were getting off the stage.
Ya, I applaud them for going up there and cosplaying but not exactly the best I’ve seen. I don’t know why but I whenever I look at the judge I think “Jackie Chan” in a puffy fancy suit lol. Do you know who won the competition?
Thank you so much for the photos, I didn’t manage to get any of the cosplay comp.
We (AUNSW) were the ones in the yukatas, thanks for the compliment, it makes me all happy to read that ^^;;; and I’m still giddily high from yesterday.
Thanks for putting up photos Adun
I was too far away for my camera to get many decent shots.
And yes, the cosplayers moved on far too quickly
Slyruto
Bubby: I wish I could do shadow clones so I could take photos from above and from the ground floor.
AS: Most of the time, I usually don’t hang around to find out who won the competition. Though from what I saw, I can’t really pick any of them as winners. But then I have a high level of standard when it comes to cosplay, but that’s just me.
Sharyn: Just doing my bid for the Sydney anime community.
jwai: I think we need Hard Gay to come back and teach everyone how it’s done.
Slyruto: Slyruto so ninja!
Thankyou for the yukata photo. I’m glad you appreciated AnimeUNSW’s efforts. And thankyou for the lovely photos and reviews! ^^
Yeah, i wish i was seated elsewhere too. But you just had to find the angle which got me in nearly everyshot didn’t ya? I was angled so that everyone infront of the stage got clear shots of the Cosplayers.
Calling me an eyesore? Mahfuckah Chairman Kaga is SEXY!… or at least Jackie Chan in a puffy shirt is sexy……or not…whatevs.
Alot of cosplayers were posing for about 10 seconds, the ones who didnt were probably the ones who didnt feel confident enough to do so… stand in line then walking on stage facing hundreds of people are very different things. Some people realise as soon as they’re on stage that they rather be off of it.
The MCs i personally felt were great and added alot of energy and are certainly better than most i’ve seen at conventions… though your point about swearing (mostly Blasphemy) is well valid, i never realised how much Phoenix Wright say the Eff word.
Great photos, though i felt you probably could have gone for a faster shutter speed to reduce motion blur… unless of course you didnt have a tripod then shooting at 75-300 handheld would be a royal pain, im presuming you have a Canon then crank up the iso to get that faster shutter speed.
If you really wanted me out, photoshop some bokeh… or get some fast glass.
haha someone cosplayed harima kenji!
some of the cosplay are good. BUT something strange there.. where’s haruhi :O
Might have something to do with the fact that most of the best cosplayers did not go up on stage. You really had to find them in the crowd.
I agree with Jeremy here.
If you still don’t agree then two words
Anime dub.
Eve: Yeah AnimeUNSW had a lot of people checking out the stall throughout the day so it was hard to get a photo, but I still managed!
Jeremy: Yeah it was my fault for choosing such an angle. But live and learn.
Standing on the stage can be a little intimidating, I know as I’ve done cosplay before, though I do hope that next time these people will know to stand still for just a few seconds longer. Also I was using a tripod, and an ISO of 1600, but it was mainly an issue of cosplayers moving around so much.
ron~: He needed his hige! Or an extremely long beard. I too was surprised to see no Haruhi in the competition.
icie: Truth! But like I said, I was half-assed in taking photos that day, I’m not sure why.
Jacky: Your opinion never counts, lol.
Awesome photos! You must have been in a pretty awesome position to take those photos on main stage.
WHERE IS MIYAVI?! T.T”
ZOMG, Where’s Tarou L?! … and I can see me…=.=”””
p.s Miyavi ruled!
Some are good, a lot of them weren’t very applause-worthy in my opinion (such as the Naruto and Dokuro-chan ones…)
Haiya,
I arrived back in sydney after 7 years of living in europe and i miss the latest an-con! what a bum.
Although, judging from your photos i must say that the quality is there.
i’m not the biggest cosplay fan but i do appreciate it when its done well and so far my eyes arent fuly tearing up.
Nice camera tho…
