ED: Utatane” by Chata
Impressions
Back when I was looking through Moonphase and seeing all the new shows, Potemayo at first looked to be a kids show to me, what with the two cute chibi characters and how the rest of the show looks. However after watching the first episode, I can see that this isn’t a kids show all that much. Well it can be in a sense, but what Potemayo is more of a slice of life show which a sense of light humour, and a touch of cuteness.
This is the 2nd series that JC Staff are producing, with the third being Zero no Tsukaima, I’m pleased with what they have done with Potemayo. The show has a very colourful look to it and with the watercolored look to the background and the cuteness of the characters, show that JC Staff do what they do best. The OP and ED theme are nice, but I’ll have to listen to them again to gauage whether I like them or not. The OP is done by MOSIAC.WAV, and I probably haven’t heard anything from them since Sumomo mo Momo mo. But the upbeat song goes well with the cuteness of the show.
The whole basis of Potemayo is a little odd. Moriyama finds Potemayo in his fridge one morning, but closes the door on her. Eventually he takes her out and calls her Potemayo, because he was eating a potato mayonnaise croquette at the time. Guchiko is a scythe welding version of Potemayo, but also brandishes hair ties that shoot out laser beams, which is totally random and a welcome surprise. The best part about Guchiko was her leaving a freshly slaughtered pig on Kyo’s desk as a way of thank you.
Although whilst watching this half asleep, it felt almost like an acid trip to me (probably not the best analogy). However with this being a very simple, and with simple humour, I actually enjoyed watching this. Each episode actually has two episodes, so each episode only goes for 12 minutes, so at least it doesn’t make a whole episode feel dragged out. Judging from the preview, it seems that JC Staff want to air this in mixed order, just like Suzumiya Haruhi, since next episode is episodes 23 & 24. But anyway, I’ll continue watching this as it’s quite a simple watch and doesn’t require much effort in translating, though I don’t think I’ll blog this.
