Hayate no Gotoku! - 11

Maria suggests that they all visit Nagi’s grandfather, Sanzenin Mikado, so they can introduce Hayate to him. On the helicopter ride there, Hayate learns that he is Nagi’s only blood relative left and that he is powerful enough to erase his existence. Upon landing, Nagi, Maria and Sakuya are greeted by the butlers and maids, but Hayate is tied up, thinking he is an intruder. As Nagi is changing clothes, Hayate is walking around the grounds and sees a fancy vase, thinking that it could clear his 150 million yen debt. But a voice tells him that vase is only worth 5 million. Surprised he turns around to find an old man standing there and thinks he is the gardener. The old man takes Hayate to a lookout simply so he can peek at Nagi and Maria changing, but Hayate drags him away.

The old man asks why Hayate has a 150 million yen debt, so Hayate explains his situation. At this point, the man reveals himself to be Sanzenin Mikado, and he says that Hayate’s life is worthless since he is wasting it on paying back a debt. So he gives Hayate a pendant and tells him it’s a guide. He tells him that if Hayate doesn’t think his life is worthless, then he should keep the pendant as it may bring him fortune in the future. Mikado returns to the mansion and asks if Nagi wants the Sanzenin inheritance, but ends up crying to Maria when Nagi tells him she prefers if he died sooner. Nagi feels that she wouldn’t have money problems due to her stock portfolio, so Mikado holds up her manga. This causes Nagi to beat Mikado up and take back her manga. Mikado explains that he is bringing this topic up now as Nagi is going to die soon.

Outside, Hayate is thinking of what Mikado said to him, but is shortly interrupted by Nagi, saying they are going home. As they are talking, the pendant glows a dark aura and Hayate senses something coming. He manages to dodge the sword of a man attacking them, and Nagi thinks this man is after the Sanzenin inheritance. Reason for this is because of what Mikado said earlier. Nagi is to inherit the fortune, but other family members don’t like that, so he gave them a condition that anyone who makes Nagi cry, apologise, and willing to give the inheritance will inherit the fortune instead. Nagi rather die than do something that embarrassing, so the man decides to attack Hayate instead as Mikado suggested hurting Hayate would make Nagi cry and apologise.

Hayate thinks that Nagi would go into a state of poverty if she doesn’t get the inheritance and feels bad about his debt. He resolves that he’ll pay back the debt soon, and although he doesn’t know the meaning of his life, he vows to protect Nagi. After defeating the attacker with a single kick, he pleads a vow to protect Nagi from anyone who tries to make her cry and he stretches out his hand. Nagi is then completely embarrassed but eventually takes his hand.

Impressions

So now we’re back on track with the storyline, but this episode wasn’t really all that funny. There were a few references in this episode but the only one I picked up was Yahoo Auctions. But given the nature of the story development here it can’t really be helped. I find it interesting how Mikado made Hayate realise the worth of his life of having to pay a debt for 40 years as Hayate never really thought beyond that. But still, even with a series like this, there really isn’t much of an actual plot going on so far, but with this episode it shows us something.

The pendant that was given to Hayate may play a role later on in the series. I’m not entirely sure on how this will work out as they give the idea that the pendant as a final piece that would be used at the near end of the series. Though the manga is still going so I doubt we’ll be seeing it appear again anytime soon. Plus the dark aura from it also seems to give the idea of it being an important piece.

The condition of making Nagi cry and apologise is funny as it’s definitely something we can’t see Nagi doing. But with this condition and Hayate vowing to protect Nagi, we’ll soon be seeing the reason of the title called Hayate the Combat Butler. Also seeing Nagi’s deredere side was so cute.

Next week, Ayumu gets to see Hayate again after his long absence from school.
