I'm ~pretty sure~ there was an interview with some ADV staff saying they had to get both, but I can't find it now... if I do, I'll certainly post it. ;)

Right now AIR is a gamble for ADV at the moment. I think how well AIR DVD sales go could determine the outcome for Kanon if it were to be licensed. Also I don't see how ADV "had" to license both the TV series and movie. They could've just gone with either one but I think it was more of a title issue in case another distributor licensed either TV series or movie.

"With the recent licensing of AIR by ADV, it doesn’t seem very much of a surprise that they would also want Kanon."

It woudn't be much of a surprise if the sells of their AIR DVDs were very good. But the DVDs aren't released yet and might as well be a huge R1 flop ... well... hopefully they don't get disappointed.

"However since ADV licensed both AIR TV and Movie, made by two different companies, which Kanon did they acquire? Well obviously it would be the KyoAni version but it does make me wonder if they also decided to get the Toei version as well."

They HAD to license both movie and TV for AIR, and who knows - it might be true for Kanon too...
