Hayate no Gotoku - 05

Hayate is getting Nagi ready for school, but instead she goes back to sleep. As the phone rings, Nagi pretends to be an answering machine and hangs up. But then someone comes crashing through the window and acts like they are a welcomed guest requesting tea, so Nagi pours it over her head. Maria explains that this girl is Aizawa Sakuya, a childhood friend and a relative of Nagi’s. She came over to see the new butler, Hayate, but she finds him more amusing than an actual butler.

Though after beating him up a few times, Sakuya comes to accepts Hayate and entrusts Nagi to him. Later on maria finds out that they are out of tea and send Hayate out to buy some, but with it being cold, she gives him a very expensive cashmere coat to wear and tells him not to get it dirty. Along the way he encounters many events which he manages to dodge such as a falling paint can, a soba delivery, and ink-squirting octopus. Heading through the park think that it would be safer, he encounters a girl by the vending machine where he first met Nagi. She appears to be lost so Hayate decides to help her, but a group of men in suits surround them where each party think they are trying to kidnap the girl, whose name is Isumi.

Well Hayate manages to take Isumi away by jumping through the trees but eventually comes across a pond and begins to fall. Remembering about not getting the coat dirty, he uses the coat to grab a nearby branch and stops above the water, hoever the coat rips and Hayate falls into the pond along with the coat. Worried about what to do with the coat, Isumi says that she’ll reimburse him since he protected her but Hayate says he doesn’t want to accept the offer. Though still worried about the group of men, he takes Isumi to the front gates of the Sanzenin house and leaves her there since he can’t go inside yet.

Impressions

Another two new characters are introduced this week, although I do like having new characters introduced, I didn’t find this week’s episode as good as last weeks. Probably mainly due to how they were introduced but I think over the course of the series I may end up liking Sakuya and Isumi. Sakuya so far I can see being similar to Nagi though I really do hate listening to the Osaka dialect as I do have trouble at times trying to understand what they are saying. Like when I watched Lovely Complex episode 1 raw most of the stuff they said flew over my head. At least we know that Sakuya cares for Nagi so we might see Sakuya helping Nagi out later in the series. Isumi is by far a very different character from the rest of the cast as everyone seems quite energetic, but Isumi appears to be the quiet and shy type and her presence within the cast of characters doesn’t appear to be very strong.

The cashmere coat was one of the funniest parts in this episode. Mainly due to all the people involved in the accident describing how it could ruin a cashmere coat but also Hayate’s reactions to each of the scenarios. Another is seeing Kagimiya Rie’s roles that were referenced in the one scene: Bell (MAR), Shana (Shakugan no Shana), and Alphonse Elric (Full Metal Alchemist) as it goes to show that Synergy SP are sure doing a lot to please the watchers, unlike a certain other company *cough*Gainax*cough*. Anyway the list of references I picked up:

  • Solid Snake at the very start (I think it’s Solid Snake)
  • The Bell, Shana, and Al reference
  • Piyoko from Tokimeki Memorial on Hayate’s apron
  • Detective Conan sign
  • Ginta and Dorothy from MAR guest appearance
  • Kenshin’s “oro” that surround Isumi

That’s all I picked up for now but I’m sure there are more I missed. Like the 3 shots of Sakuya beating up Hayate, I’m not sure if they reference anything and I missed out on the bleeped out words. Well next week we get introduced to two more characters and judging from the opening sequence, I’m guessing they are the last two main characters. But Hayate appears to get sick and Nagi cooks him something to eat.
Also I am considering buying the Viz release of the manga. If anyone has bought them, please let me know what you think of the quality of them.
