Hayate no Gotoku - 04

Nagi ends up leaving the mansion grounds in a car and Hayate finds out that she is going to school. However Nagi forgets her lunch so Hayate suggests that he’ll deliver it to her. Upon arriving at the gates, he is surpised to see the size of the school. But before entering he is stopped by one of the teachers who finds Hayate suspicious and ends up attacking him saying that she protects this school.

Hayate eventually makes his way past the teacher and finds himself lost in the school grounds. However he hears a voice calling out to him and it turns out to be a pink-haired girl in a tree. Hearing that he wants to go up the clock tower, she tells him only student council members are allowed in the higher levels. She eventually jumps down from the tree and using Hayate to break her fall. After a matter of saving a small bird, Hayate introduces himself and the girl tells him her name is Katsura Hinagiku. She decides to take Hayate up the clock tower as a thanks for what he did since she is the student council president.

Amazed by the view, Hayate thanks Hinagiku but she also tells him to call her by her first name since there is another Katsura in the school. But as the elevator doors open, the teacher from earlier appears. It just so happens she is Katsura Yukiji, Hinagiku’s older sister. After arming herself with a sword, Yukiji charges at Hayate, but Hinagiku arms herself with a sword and duels with her sister. Hayate watches from the side and mentions that he has to deliver the lunch to Nagi, so Yukiji takes the chance to steal the lunch and stands at the end of the balcony. Yukiji taunts her sister but Hinagiku doesn’t give in and stands her ground. Yukiji gives in but a huge gust of wind blows and Yukiji falls over the edge. Luckily Hayate was fast to act and saves Yukiji, but the lunch is ruined. Both Hinagiku and Yukiji promise to apologise to Nagi, but when they run into Nagi, she easily guesses what happened but she is happy Hayate came all the way just for her.

Impressions

So with two new characters, we get to see plenty of funny moments in this episode but so far I like Hinagiku the most out of the two sisters. I read on other blogs that the Katsura sisters aren’t introduced until the 4th volume but I am glad that they are introducing some of the other characters earlier as it’ll allow some character development over the series. But also judging from the OP, there is quite a large cast. Itou Shizuka did an awesome job voicing Hinagiku and Nabatame Hitomi as well with Yukiji and I’m starting to like the selection of seiyuu’s they used for the characters.

This week I watched it raw instead of subbed and I managed to pick up most of the dialogue. Probably also because I couldn’t wait to see more of this show so I’ll probably end up watching it raw. Anyway here is a list of references I picked up, though there are some I didn’t quite get or missed:

  • Tama saying Pokémon and Pikachu being beeped out.
  • Not exactly sure but I think it’s a Saint Seiya reference or something similar to the artwork.
  • Drunken Master, which could be from the Drunken Master movies.
  • Solid Snake with the cardboard box.
  • Hajime Saito’s “Aku Soku Zan” from Rurouni Kenshin.
  • Pretty sure there’s a Utena reference.
  • Gundam NewType sensing and various Gundam noises.

Well there are some others I missed so if I have, by all means post in the comments. Although this episode introduces us to two new characters, it wasn’t as funny as last week’s, but I think seeing all the references is what makes this show such an enjoyable watch. But it’s not just the references, all the characters are unique and it makes them all interesting. Though I still like to see how all the characters will fit in throughout the series.

It seems to be an Ashita no Joe reference (at least stylistically) when Hayate is punched down onto the ground.

My only problem with this is that if they continue the manga’s plot and continue it from episode 5, then we won’t be seeing Hinagiku again for awhile unless they mess with the order or something. Hopefully, it will work out.

I’m not sure if it has anything to do with drunken master movies, but I do know that it related to Yukiji being an alcoholic. She wastes her salary on alcohol, which was why she didn’t want it dropped, and thus kept Hayate from entering the school.

Pegasus Ryuusei ken and Cygnus Hyoga’s pose. Definitely Saint Seiya.
