Nodame Cantabile - 13

With the exams period underway, Mine brings up the idea of forming an orchestra with Chiaki, but he refuses. Being irritated at the supermarket, Nodame takes him out to eat conveyor belt sushi, but Chiaki takes all the expensive dishes and eats the fish and gives all the rice to Nodame. Of course by the end, Chiaki ends up paying.

The next day, a familiar face turns up, Miki Kiyora the concert master from the Nina Lutz’s music festival. She is attending their school since her teacher is teaching there now, but also proposes the idea of forming a orchestra with Chiaki. Kiyora plans to have only the best players and some include those who were at the festival. Chiaki accepts whole heartedly. Mine wants to join the orchestra, but Chiaki agrees, on the condition he gets accepted for A-Orchestra.

A few days later, Masumi is preparing for his exam, but finds out his accompanist is sick. Not knowing what to do, Nodame goes and gets Chiaki to help him out. During the performance, Masumi remembers the first time he came to the academy and when he first met Chiaki. After the performance, Chiaki invites Masumi to join his orchestra as the timpanist, which Masumi happily accepts. Once the exams are finished, everyone from S-Oke have a party to celebrate by drinking and going to karaoke and playing at the arcades. Of course some members try to get revenge but failed. Nodame also happens to bump into Saiko in the bathroom. Trying to sober her up, Saiko notices that Nodame has big hands and that is probably what Chiaki likes about Nodame.

Soon after everyone parts ways, Chiaki thinks that everyone hates him since some members didn’t get to join in his orchestra. Chiaki feels that he wants this to be the best orchestra rather than being an extension of the S-Oke. Nodame then asks Chiaki to teach her the Liszt piece that he played during his exam and starts dancing. Chiaki sees that she is doing it wrong and shows her how to do it.

Ending Sequence:

ED: 「Sagittarius」 by SUEMITSU & THE NODAME ORCHESTRA

Impressions

Well the new arc has started and we’ll soon be seeing Chiaki forming his orchestra. Though I find it a bit odd how Kiyora was never a student at the school beforehand as that’s how it was in the live drama. But of course the live drama takes a different approach to things. Once the other characters start to join, we’ll be seeing some interesting developments plus making the series a bit more refreshing since Stresemann is no longer around. Also the part of Chiaki asking Masumi to join his orchestra, I find the live drama did a better job as it was more emotional, though the anime version has it’s good points especially with Masumi rediscovering his feelings for Chiaki and how they met.

The Saiko part felt slightly out of place here, though it also seems her role has come to an end and that we won’t be seeing her much now. It also seems that she has accepted that Chiaki is with Nodame, though I do hope she’ll come back and try to win Chiaki again.

I was totally surprised to see a new ending theme, but it does feel refreshing. However with this being SUEMITSU, it feels too similar to the opening theme and I prefer the previous ending theme still. The ending sequence we see a lot of spinning, just like in Honey & Clover, and goes to show the similarities in style with the two shows and the staff behind it. Not too sure what next week’s episode is about, so the whole Chikai’s orchestra part won’t take off just yet.
