Hitohira - 01

Opening Sequence:

OP: 「Yume, Hitohira」 by Asami Yuuko

Mugi and her friend Kayo are at the school entrance announcement, but Mugi is so nervous that she can’t speak. Eventually Koya drags her to check the noticeboard and to which Mugi yells that it’s there. This of course catches the attention of some senior students watching from the school rooftop. On the first day during homeroom, Mugi is having trouble during her self introduction and becomes mute, until she is interrupted by a boy named Nishida Kai who arrives late. Apologising to Mugi, Mugi was about to greet him but instead headbutts him by accident.

Afterwards Kayo tells Mugi that she should join a club, else it will be like middle school where it went by so fast without her doing anything. During art class, Mugi notices that Kai draws really well and at the end was told to clean up the classroom. Wondering into a storage room, Mugi finds a beautiful dress and calls it the Spring Goddess. Later Kai is being chased by his sister, Risaki, but as Kai slides down the stairs, he accidentally knocks over Mugi. After being dazed, she notices that a senior student, Ichinose Nono is holding her in her arms to see if she is ok. As the bell chime ring Mugi and Kayo rush off to class, and Nono gives off a little laughter. As the day goes by, Mugi and Kayo wonder around the school checkin out what clubs there are.

Back at class, Mugi finds Kai hiding under his desk and he tells her that he doesn’t want to join the club that his sister is in. But she eventually finds him and tries to convince him by force. Nono and the other member come to see Mugi and tell them they are part of the Drama Research Society and ask if she can join them. Mugi at this point is scared and not paying attention, but fills in the form anyway. Nono tells her that drama is where you get used to being someone you are not. So they take their leave and Mugi returns to normal and wonders what club she just joined. Kai tells her the Drama Research Society and Mugi starts dreaming of her on stage before she faints.

Impressions

This was actually one of the first series to air for Spring and I somehow missed it, and I have no idea how. Anyway I am impressed by this show so far and it looks to be pretty interesting. The basis of a shy girl who can’t speak in public and happens to join a drama club will definitely show some interesting character development, though I wouldn’t limit it to just Mugi. With Mugi as the focus of the show, she is a rather unique character in which being very shy only with public speaking and it is something you don’t see often in school themed shows. Though I was surprised at how she is able to talk to Kai so easily as I thought she would be rather shy with the opposite sex, but I think that would’ve complicated things.

With the theme of being on drama and theatre, I can see ths being a better portrayal than Tsuyokiss, but then Tsuyokiss never really did focus a lot on the whole drama part. Though with a shy girl joining a drama club we’ll definitely see some interesting events, although the club isn’t exactly a drama club, but a drama research club. What do you exactly do in a drama research club? But another point from seeing the preview is that we have two drama clubs, and this brings up an interesting story with Nono and co with the other drama club. Though judging from the opening sequence, there is something between Nono and the lead performer from the drama club.

The music is nice and I like both the opening and sequence as both are smooth and catchy. The background music is also just as good and with it being a drama themed anime, I’m sure there’ll be more nice background music. The animation is really really good here, but then again I am a sucker for falling cherry blossoms, and it goes well with the character designs. Mugi I find really cute but only when she is being all shy but Kayo is just as awesome as well mainly because she carries a camera. Some reason Nono reminds me of Ichigo from Onegai Teacher, but hearing Kawasumi Ayako’s voice goes well with Nono’s character.

Even though I’m a bit late with this one, this is definitely going in the watching list. I’ll give it a few more episodes to see if I want to keep blogging it but the chances are pretty good.
