Opening Sequence:

OP: 「Sorairo Days」 by Nakagawa Shouko

Simon is a driller who lives in an underground village where he discovers a glowing drill bit when drilling. Coming out he is ridiculed by some girls before bumping into his friend Kamina. Kamina says not to worry about what pthers sayand takes him along to get him to drill a hole in the roof to get to the surface. They are foiled however by the village chief, with kamina locked up in jail. So Simon decides to continue drilling until he stumbles across a machine with a huge face. So he decides to free Kamina to show him, but are discovered by the village chief. As the village chief is punishing Kamina, the roof collapses and something falls with it.

It turns out to be a large head, so Kamina takes the chief’s sword and prepares to face it, but a girl comes from above shooting at the large head. Kamina tries to get to know the girl but Simon saved them from the large head and leads them towards the face he discovered. Kamina thinks that Simon should be the one to pilot it as he is the one who found it. Making their way through the ground, Simon ends up attacking the large head but soon get in trouble, that is until his mecha gets more power from turning the drill bit more. So striking the large head, they break out to the surface and destroy the large head flying off into the sky. Admiring the view, the girl introduces herself as Yoko before they crash to the ground. Simon ended up landing on Yoko’s breasts, but she doesn’t mind, but then hugs him closer as she has a scared look on her face. What she sees is two more large heads looking down on them.

Impressions

My friend Roobar says that this is one of the shows that he was looking forward to this season and I wasn’t sure why. But after seeing this I can see his reason why. This is Gainax’s latest work and by far it doesn’t disappoint. It was fast-paced and action packed that it was a really enjoyable watch and it reminds me very much of FLCL. Even the artstyle of the characters is very similar, although so far I can’t really say that I like the mecha designs.

Kamina’s character is really awesome and Konishi Katsuyuki did a wonderful job. It’s funny how he is also the seiyuu for Haji from Blood+, but knowing he did Kenta from Karin, and Sergay from Mai-Otome, it all fits in nicely. Simon I assume is the main character but he doesn’t give a very big impact in this episode, but seeing the start of the episode, he appears to become something big. With Yoko, I can definitely see her being the base of all the fanservice that we’ll probably see throughout the series, but she sure does kick some ass.

With this being a Gainax production, I can see this getting better as the series progresses a this is a Imaishi Hiroyuki work and hopefully we’ll see some better mecha designs. So far there isn’t much plot to be known but I did enjoy watching the first episode. However I don’t think that I’ll continue blogging this as I prefer to go with Hayate and StrikerS.
