Seto no Hanayome - 01

Opening Sequence:

OP: 「Romantic summer」 by SUN & LUNAR

Michishio Nagasumi is with his parents on a summer holiday to his grandmother’s house. As he was swimming at the beach, he ends up drowning, but is saved by a mermaid before blacking out. When he wakes up he finds his father looking at him and when getting back to his grandmother’s house, he tells them what happened. His grandmother tells them there is a legend about mermaids in the area and that they’ll be in something big if those legends are true. A girl suddenly appears and introduces herself as Seto San. She promptly asks to be Nagasumi’s bride and to take responsibility to what happened before.

Nagasumi’s parents jump quick to conclusions, but then three yakuza men come and take Nagasumi and his parents away before pushing them into the ocean. When Nagasumi wakes up, he finds himself and his parents in an underwater room with the yakuza. The boss introduces himself as Seto Gouzaburou and he wants to kill Nagasumi for finding out their secret. However his wife, Ren, thinks that Nagasumi should marry Sa, making him a part of the family and the problem solved. Pressured from his parents, Nagasumi is reluctant and this makes Gouzaburou mad enough to charge at him.

Trying to run away, with the yakuza and a shark after him, San saves Nagasumi and takes him to the surface. Nagasumi asks why San helped him and she told him that she couldn’t leave a person in trouble. However San’s father finds them and prepares to kill Nagasumi, but it’s at that moment that he asks San’s father to allow him to marry her. He still rejects the proposal but in the end San becomes Nagasumi’s bride.

Ending Sequence:

ED: 「Ashita e no Hikari」 by Hinoi Asuka

Impressions

After watching this, my impression of the show is totally different to what I thought originally. It was weird seeing a comedy romance especially where the official site looks elegant and serious. There are plenty of funny moments but I think seeing San’s father going overly violent like that can get a bit old fast. Although this crazyness is probably the best factor in this show and the animation goes well with this style and it’s pretty colourful. Although the artstyle is somewhat blocky and does look a bit weird at times.

The opening theme is pretty catchy once it gets into it and the animation sequence with the dancing kind of reminds me of Galaxy Angel Rune. The ending is just a slowly zooming out shot with a slow paced song, but so far I enjoy both of them as they are quite nice. It’s been a while since I saw a crazy random comedy romance and I think Seto no Hanayome is a good pick for this season. However with the artstyle being as it is, it could lead to a downhill in animation quality, though with the high amount of crazyness I might not even notice it. I’ll keep watching this to see how it goes but chances of blogging this are low.
