When Chiaki and Stresemann perform the Rachmaninoff piece, the crowd is awestruck by how beautifully they are performing, even the writer Sakuma is crying. When the performance is over, Chiaki is dragged around to various places by Stresemann whilst Nodame is playing her rendition of Rachmaninoff.
Saiko hears from Tanioka that Chiaki has caught a cold and goes to visit, but finds out he just returned home from his trip with Stresemann. After talking about their performances, Saiko goes and lies on Chiaki’s bed whilst he takes a shower. After his shower, Chiaki is greeted by a exhausted and messy Nodame who has been playing for days. Chiaki tries to feed Nodame with Saiko watching from Chiaki’s bedroom not knowing what is going on.
Another great episode and so far the best performance so far. They went a bit further in this one where they actually animated the movements of the musicians and Chiaki and seeing Chiaki’s piano playing, you can see and feel that it’s a rather difficult piece to play. Seeing Sakuma moved to tears I would feel the same as Chiaki’s playing was really beautiful.
I find it amazing how Nodame was moved by Chiaki’s piano and went straight home to play her rendition of Rachmaninoff and it shows that she is starting to take a passion for music. Though with Stresemann visiting her, I’m not too sure if that was a dream or not, but the pocket watch she received will play a major part later on in the series and hopefully we’ll see more of Nodame’s story soon.
With the performance taking up nearly half the episode, the second half is focused on Saiko. I found it rather odd that they moved onto Saiko’s part so quickly, but I think it’s that she doesn’t really have a major role in the main story and they want to get her story done over quickly. We can see that her and Chiaki were really different and that Chiaki has always been serious and putting his music before anything else. But at this point, I’m not sure where Saiko’s story is leading to but hopefully it’ll make her move on and make her realise what she is missing in her performances. Judging from the preview, the next episode will finish Saiko’s story.
Also to note, the Nodame Orchestra LIVE and STORY CDs have been released and they compose of all the musical performances that you see from both the anime and live drama. I would recommend you download them and listen as they are really good. But of course they’ll contain some of the pieces from future performances so if you don’t want to spoil yourself I’d hold off.
