Manabi has come down with the mumps and has to miss school for a week. This leaves the duties of the student council to Mei and Mikan. Although the two find it difficult to communicate with each other, they are given the task to think up a theme for the school festival. Over the course of the days they work together thinking up ideas and on the day of Manabi’s return from hospital, they found the concept of “friends to close friends”.

Impressions
This episode focuses on the relationship between Mei and Mikan which I thought was really nice. At first I thought Manabi was the centre of all the girls and that everyone revolves her, but that is not the case. The development between the girls is an important factor in this show where they want to have an enjoyable school life, and it’s all from the result of Manabi’s presence, whether she is there or not. In the last episode, we found out that Mei was looking for something by coming to high school and I feel that this episode demonstrates that. Her search for friends is already shown by how she joined the student council, but to become even closer friends is demonstrated with her being with Mikan for the week.
The theme for the school festival is rather surprising, and it reflects on what Mei and Mikan have experienced, but personally I thought Manabi would have been the one to think up the theme. Although I don’t find it too bad, but it goes to show that the girls can do something without Manabi. Also seeing Manabi with the mumps is pretty scary.
But still, this show keeps me laughing. Still plenty of humour like when Mikan is kicking Shimojima in the head, Mei and Mikan trying out Manabi’s idea of running, to Momo just sitting there staring into space. Although really there hasn’t been much Momo in the last few episodes and it seems that she is outside of the group. Though I think later on she’ll eventually be part of them and I hope to see an episode focused on her.

This has been a great series so far, not as insane comedy as some of ufotable’s other series like 2×2 Shinobuden or Dokkoida, but still a lot of fun to watch. It seems like they’re mostly going for cute/slice-of-life, but when it’s funny, it’s really funny. Mikan’s been getting more screentime than Manabi lately, but I’m guessing that’ll change towards the end.
I find it very enjoyable how the show goes from strength to strength instead of sagging in the middle of the season.
