Well with the end of the year approaching and with the Fall Season over, it’s time to give my view on the notable series of 2006. Series that made you cry “MOÉ”, series that made you bash your head against the desk, series that made you want more, and series that make you cringe it deemed to be a rather difficult tasks to select which were my personal favourites. But I suppose also it was rather hard to remember what was shown over the year (I usually have a motto of watch and forget). But sitting back and thinking about it I have finally come to my decisions.
Award for Best Action
Now there weren’t a great deal of action shows this year and this is the first that comes to mind. Unlike some other series where they have a continuous story, Black Lagoon really has none of that. Each arc brings along something fresh and exciting and it doesn’t drag on.
Runner Ups: ZEGAPAIN, Blood+, Shakugan no Shana
Award for Best Animation
Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu
Trying not to get caught in the hype that is Haruhi-ism, this was a rather difficult choice. This year showed a lot of well produced shows but Kyoto Animation have indeed proved that they are one of the best with scenes such as the Spaceship battle, Yuki vs Ryoko, and the school festival. Also being the producers for Air, FMP: TSR, and Kanon, they are indeed one of my favourite animators.
Runner Ups: Ouran High School Host Club, Kanon, Ergo Proxy
Award for Best Comedy
Ouran High School Host Club
A rather obvious choice. The simplicity and straight out pure comedy made this the winner. Other shows tend to be more random and one offs, but Ouran was consistant and maintained well with the storyline.
Runner Ups: School Rumble Ni Gakki, Nerima Daikon Brothers
Award for Best Drama
Hanbun no Tsuki ga Noboru Sora
Although a short series of only 6 episodes, it definitely proved itself as a great drama series. The realisation of sickness and health along with the building relationship between Yuuichi and Rika was rather moving. But also with the way it ended, although it came to a somewhat happy ending, it makes you think ahead of the future and know that Rika will eventually die.
Runner Ups: Honey & Clover 2, Bokura ga Ita
Award for Best Slice of Life
ARIA The NATURAL
A most obvious choice as this is one of my most favourite series. With no real plot, watching each and every episode is very relaxing. Focusing mainly on Akari, you see the world as she does and learn to appreciate the many people that you meet, and the many memories that you make. ARIA is just like wine, you savour each and every bit of it, rather than have it all in one go.
Runner Ups: Asatte no Houkou
Award for Best Mecha and Most Underrated
Really, there isn’t any other mecha show this year, but even though if there was, it definitely wouldn’t have beaten ZEGAPAIN. The use of the CG took a little while to get used to, but once you accept it, it is a worthwhile series. Also the winner of Most Underrated as the storyline, animation, and character development was just awesome. The very first few episodes just make it seem like a regular mecha show, but beyond that it became something totally different.
Award for Best Male Character
Aizawa Yuuichi from Kanon
Voiced by the same seiyuu who did Kyon, Yuuichi’s sarcastic, witty and laid back nature is what makes him the best male character. It was kind of weird to determine who is better out of Kyon and Yuuichi, but I believe Yuuichi wins overall as he offers more in character than Kyon does.
Award for Best Female Character
Fujioka Haruhi from Ouran High School Host Club
A female dressed as a guy attending an elite school, who is smart, witty, and a person with a disregard for sexual advances is a sure win. Although she is a reverse trap, she still comes to term of what her actual gender is.
These next two awards are under the request of Roobar that I should include them in:
Award for Sexiest Male Character
The Entire Male Members of the Ouran Host Club
You just can’t select one out of a whole group of handsome devils. Each have their own personal traits which we all love, or hate, but you end up loving all of them anyway.
Award for Sexiest Female Character
Eri Sawachika from School Rumble Ni Gakki
Tsunderekko, twin tails, blonde, comes from a rich family. What else more could you ask for? Definitely one of the sexiest females of 2006.
Award for Best Anime of 2006
Now it is rather difficult to remember what aired over the year but by far the one that I most anticipated, and has exceeded my expectations, was Kanon. Although a current show that is being aired, it makes me wanting more at the end of each episode. Animation, storyline, character development are top notch, but it’s the cute moments, and the randomness of Yuuichi’s sarcastic manner is what makes me love this series so much. With the original Toei version being at the top of my list for many years, KyoAni’s version has just simply smashed it out of place and now sits on top.
That’s it for the Best of categories, now we move onto the Worst of categories.
Award for Worst Animation
Yoake Mae Yori Ruri-iro Na
The MOST obvious choice was definitely YoakeNa. Throughout the series, with the exception of episode 1 (though just barely) was consistently bad and it ruined YoakeNa for me. Simply put, you just can’t obtain the goddess feel that is Feena in CG form into an animation adaptation. I do hope KyoAni do a remake of this, but then I hope KyoAni do a remake of a lot of series.
Runner Ups: Soul Link, Disgaea
Award for Worst Story
This literally was draining my soul every time I watched it, and I’m most likely soul-less for watching the whole thing. I was a fan of the .hack series until this one came along. The only good parts in this series was the actual search for the Key of the Twilight, but after that it was just pure 12-14 episodes of Haseo going all emo and Tabby going “what should I do?”. Even if it ran as a 13 episode series, it would still be bad.
Runner Ups: Soul Link
Award for Worst Comedy
High School Girls
A toss up between this and Galaxy Angel Rune but I think this wins above. Now I don’t mind fanservice in anime, but High School Girls just went over the top with using all the fanservice for comedy. Although I did laugh at some of the jokes pulled but it was still rather bad comedy.
Runner Ups: Galaxy Angel Rune
Award for Worst Character Design
I don’t know what the hell happened here, but it seemed like all the characters got hit with the Luffy disease, tried doing a Gomu Gomu attack but their arms are stuck at that length. So yes, the lankyness of the characters just makes it so bad.
Award for Most Anti-Climatic
Black Blood Brothers
Now I actually enjoyed Black Blood Brothers quite a bit. The only problem was that it was too short. We didn’t get much character development nor much storyline, but the worst part would be the ending. We had Jirou defeat Cassa, but it stops there, we didn’t get a very good conclusion and I see that this series would have been better as a 26 episode series.
Runner Ups: .hack//ROOTS
Award for Most Boring Series
I could stand watching more than one episode of Soul Link. It lacked on many things like animation, but the story was just atrocious and I found my thoughts wondering when I was watching it.
Runner Ups: Nana, Good Witch of the West
Award for Most Dragged Out Series
This is one series I have actually stopped watching, but my dearest Roobar continues watching. But from what I have seen, this series just drags on. I’m rather glad that I stopped watching as Roobar has said to me “I feel like it’s a chore to watch this”.
Runner Ups: Tsubasa Chronicle Season 2
Award for Most Annoying Character
Tabby from .hack//ROOTS
The whole “what should I do” thing really got on my nerves and it was her indecisiveness that made her extremely annoying. Her whole help heal people group was just stupid and made me cringe every time I saw it.
Runner Ups: Mamiya Ayumi (Magikano)
Award for Worst Anime of 2006
This was rather a difficult choice as there are a few bad anime of 2006 but I think this tops it. Firstly with the OVA series, it showed us that Kujibiki Unbalance had the chance to become an awesome series, but with the TV series, it’s changed completely. I really don’t like the animation style of the TV series and the storyline is just crap. If they kept the same quality as with the OVAs then I would think differently to this.
Runner Ups: Yoake Mae Yori Ruri-iro Na, Soul Link, Disgaea
Certainly 2006 had it’s selection of good and bad anime. But what will 2007 hold for us? Well I’m not too sure but I do hope there’ll be some great variety and hopefully I can watch majority of the shows that will air over the year. And to finish off, as also requested by Roobar:
MANLIEST ANIME OF ALL
Hokuto no Ken
