During breakfast, Makoto is still unable to hold her chopsticks properly. Yuuichi, who is sitting across the table, watches Makoto whilst thinking of what Mishio said to him about her losing her life. Walking along, Makoto complains that its cold saying that being warm is better and that she likes spring. She also says that once spring comes she’ll be more energetic.
During school, Yuuichi goes to Mishio’s classroom and tries to call her out, but she refuses to see Yuuichi. In class, whilst watching Nayuki trying to stay awake, Yuuichi remembers back 10 years ago when he was looking after an injured kitsune. But due to him returning to his hometown, he had to return the kitsune to the hills and leave it there. Thus he believes everything started there. After classes, Makoto is waiting at the gates again for Yuuichi, hoping that he would buy her a nikuman so she can warm up.
Walking along the street, Yuuichi decides to buy Makoto anything that she wants. But walking along a jewellery store, he gets slightly worried. But then Makoto spots something that she wants, and that is a bell bracelet. Yuuichi thinks that she should choose something better but Makoto thinks that it’s fine and it’s cute. Passing by the arcade, Makoto sees a bunch of girls taking photos in the photo booths. Yuuichi suggests that if she wants to join them then she should call out to them, but Makoto says that’s not the case.

Back at home, everyone is having curry for dinner, which Nayuki’s comments that it’s delicious. After dinner, Makoto is having trouble trying to put toothpaste on her toothbrush, but Yuuichi helps her out in the end and brushes her teeth for her. Later on, Makoto enters Yuuichi’s room saying that Piro wants to sleep in his bed again. Yuuichi is awake of course and says that Makoto is the one that wants to sleep with him, but Makoto tells him not to say disgusting things. Thus Yuuichi tells her to do whatever she wants. Lying in bed, Yuuichi can’t go to sleep, thinking about what Mishio said about him being in the middle of a miracle. With that, he gets changed and heads out to Monomi Hills.
Looking out towards the city from the hill, he hears a jingle of bells, and he finds that Makoto has followed him. Makoto says that since Yuuichi left without saying anything she was worried. But Makoto feels that something similar has happened before and she is slowly remembering her fox form. Though Yuuichi yells at her to not remember, which surprises Makoto. Yuuichi says that it’s fine that she doesn’t remember since she is a human girl named Sawatari Makoto, whilst hugging her. Since Makoto is cold, Yuuichi suggests that they go home. Back home, Makoto says that she is scared to fall asleep since she feels that she can’t see anything but she’ll be all alone. Yuuichi tells her not to worry since he is there with her.
Next day at school, Yuuichi sees Mishio pass by. Calling out to her, she simply ignores him. Walking out to the gates, he notices that Makoto isn’t there waiting for him. Arriving home, he finds out from Akiko that Makoto hasn’t arrived home, so he runs out to look for her. Returning home without finding her, Akiko calls the police and finds nothing. Nayuki blames herself for not keeping an eye on her, but Yuuichi says that it’s not her fault, but his. Hearing the door open, Yuuichi finds that its Makoto covered in dirt and snow. Lecturing her about them being worried, Makoto ends up fainting due to her having a fever. Makoto explains that Piro is missing and that she spent the whole time looking for her. Lying in bed, Makoto reaches out for Yuuichi’s hands. Yuuichi takes her hand and says that he is there for her. Yuuichi tells her to get better soon so he can read manga to her again, and buy her nikuman.
In the morning, as Yuuichi was about to leave for school, Makoto is holding onto his coat. Yuuichi tells her that she should sleep if she is still sick, but she doesn’t want to since Yuuichi isn’t there with her. So thus Yuuichi decides to skip school to stay with Makoto. Later at night, Yuuichi meets up with Mishio, who called him earlier. Asking how Makoto is, Yuuichi says that she is asleep for now, but she has been behaving like a child. After confirming Makoto had a fever, Mishio realises that she is losing her power, and if she has a fever a second time, she won’t survive. However Makoto survived the first time due to her strong feelings for Yuuichi. Yuuichi, desperate to help Makoto asks Mishio for any advice. But the only thing Mishio can do is tell him a story about the legend of the mysterious beast that lives in Monomi Hills - the Youko. The villages it appeared in always faced catastrophies and has been seen as a symbol of calamity. That’s what Makoto is, but Mishio says that they aren’t supposed to be spoken ill of. That is when Yuuichi realises that Misho has gone through the same experience. Mishio admits that she used to play with a friend she met on the hills and played with them everyday. But eventually that friend started to forget things and all Mishio could do was watch. Ever since, Mishio is the way she is, and she tells Yuuichi to stay strong throughout this ordeal, which Yuuichi reassures her that he will.
Back at home, Yuuichi reveals to Nayuki and Akiko that Makoto’s real identity is the kitsune that he looked after 10 years ago. Akiko understands now since she knew about Yuuichi brang the kitsune home when he was a child. She mentions that the kitsune liked the sound of bells, just like Makoto, and had always played with the bells on her purse. Nayuki doesn’t know what to decide, but since Yuuichi and Akiko believe in it, then she believes in it as well. Thus Yuuichi decides to take time off school to stay with Makoto.
Making paper planes together, we see Makoto playing just like a child. Later on Akiko asks if they want lunch, but with Makoto asleep, Yuuichi says he’ll eat it later. Looking at the two, Akiko comments that they look like siblings, or they could be lovers. But Yuuichi just laughs it off. With Makoto awake, she is playing with her bells. Nayuki and Akiko are standing outside their room with dinner, but leave the two alone, with Nayuki looking back. The next day, Makoto asks Yuuichi to read some manga to her, but Yuuichi says that she can’t read the manga if she keeps looking at his face. Ending the manga about being married, Makoto weakly says that she wants to marry Yuuichi, so they can be together forever. This takes Yuuichi by surprise, as Makoto leans into Yuuichi’s chest.

Impressions
It really was sad to see Makoto go from being so energetic and cheerful, to not being able to talk properly and behaving like a child. In a way I see that KyoAni have pulled this off better than how Toei did it, but both are still rather heart wrenching. Though Yuuichi has fully realised what Makoto is, he still doesn’t abide by Mishio’s warning about staying close to her, and it goes to show that he does have a caring side to him. Plus it does deal with him personally. Although Yuuichi yelled at Makoto from trying to remember, I get the feeling that Yuuichi probably wants to forget that Makoto isn’t human either.
The part of Makoto saying she wants to marry Yuuichi shows just how strong her feelings are for Yuuichi. I wouldn’t call it desperation, but I think at this point Makoto does have some slight idea of what is happening to her sub-consciously. Though it may be out of fear that caused her to say such a thing. Also I liked how Akiko decided to cook curry, she could see that Makoto couldn’t use chopsticks so she went and made dinner that could be eaten with a spoon. Such is the awesomeness of Akiko.
I really liked how they played out Makoto’s arc. The build up of her character was great and now we are heading into something heartbreaking in the next episode. But it still makes me wonder how future episodes will play out as it is obvious that Makoto will die. I do hope they do something similar to Toei’s version of when Akiko said goodbye, but either way, it’s going to make me break into tears.
Kanon Merchandise of the Week
This week’s feature is quite a rare item. What we have here is a Nayuki trading figure. As you can see I got the “rare” one, though i wasn’t too happy about getting it. I wanted a coloured one but alas, that was the time when money was scarce for me. A friend of mine from uni however had plenty of cash and bought the rest and he ended up getting the entire coloured set. Uguu~~~

Yeah, it was incredibly sad, and Yuuichi is definitely feeling it. He’s actions are just to veer himself away from the sorrowful truth.
I’m not sure if I will even be able to watch episode 10…
