Kanon - 05

We have the girl saying that she sees a dream, a dream in which she is waiting for someone. Although that person still hasn’t come even after waiting for hours, days, and years.

Yuuichi tries to talking to Mai but she stands there silent. A sound from behind causes Yuuichi to turn around, but he finds nothing there. As he turns back to Mai, she is charging at him. But Yuuichi is knocked to the side by an invisible force and Mai slashes something in the air. As Mai is leaving, Yuuichi asks Mai what she did, but all Mai says is that she slays ghost.

After the bath Yuuichi finds Makoto waiting to return to the bath. As she returns, Yuuichi gets her to say “mamono no utsumono” 10 times. Makoto reluctantly agrees but she ends up tongue twisting the words. Realising what Yuuichi just did, Makoto swears that she’ll get him back, but ends up hitting her leg as she closes the door.

Later at night, Yuuichi is lying in bed thinking about what Mai said. But he hears a faint sneezing in the corridor and realises its Makoto. Pressed against the wall, Makoto enters the room but Yuuichi grabs her from behind and takes her back to her room. Yuuichi tells her to go to sleep05 and recover from her flu, whilst tucking her blanket for her.

The next day, Yuuichi sits at the table to have breakfast but after talking to Akiko he suddenly realises Ayu is sitting there as well. After getting an explanation, Yuuichi suggest to Ayu that she try Akiko’s jam for an out of this world experience. As Ayu takes her leave, Nayuki appears at the front door and Yuuichi tells her to hurry up but she ends up sleep05ing against the door frame.

At school, Nayuki is awoken by Yuuichi and she finds all her classmates have already left. Walking along the corridor talking, Nayuki falls asleep05 again but standing. Parting ways with Nayuki, Yuuichi meets Mai at the same spot that he saw her last night. Asking her about the ghost business, Mai doesn’t respond and they are shortly interrupted by Sayuri, who jokingly says that he is confessing his love for her.

Being invited to lunch, Yuuichi introduces himself to Sayuri and Mai and then proceeds to eat. Upon tasting Sayuri’s cooking, he approves of her becoming his wife. Sayuri giggles at this but says that if she can become Yuuichi’s wife by making good food, then everyone who can cook will be his wife. After a bit of talking, Yuuichi and Sayuri notice that Mai is silently looking at the bento and Yuuichi asks her what she wants to eat. She says Tamagoyaki so Yuuichi serves in on to her plate. This makes Yuuichi take all the bento’s to his side which makes Mai ask for what she wants to eat each time. Sayuri laughs as the two are talking as she finds Yuuichi an interesting person. Thus after lunch Sayuri invites Yuuichi to have lunch with them again and which he promises.

Walking along, he notices Shiori out in the snow, so Yuuichi runs out to meet her. Asking about her last name, Shiori says that it’s a secret and asks him to just call her Shiori so Yuuichi tells her to call him Onii-chan (big brother). So Shiori plays along, but the both of them find it awkward. The topic changes to medicine and Shiori whispers to her self that Yuuichi is indeed like a big brother. Asking what she is doing at school, Shiori explains she wanted to meet Yuuichi since he is an interesting person and they start talking about the snow. Shiori says that she likes the snow and wants to make a 10 metre snowman. After a sneeze, Yuuichi recommends that she return home to rest, so Shiori then takes her leave.

On the way home, Yuuichi runs into an energetic Makoto who is heading out to buy tofu. Worried if she can get back home, Makoto says that she’s an adult, not a child. So with this, Yuuichi asks her to buy him an “ero-hon” (adult book). Though Makoto doesn’t understand, Yuuichi tells her it’s a magazine for adults and gives her money to buy it. He tells her to buy it from the bookstore and ask the storekeep05er for it.

A few hours later, Makoto returns looking angry about what Yuuichi made her to do. After a small argument, her attention draws to the nikuman that Yuuichi is eating. Offering it to Makoto to smell, she tried to bite it but Yuuichi pulls it back. Asking if Akiko made it, Yuuichi tells her that he bought it, and the same with the manga that Makoto points out. Having a read through the manga, Makoto becomes interested in it and asks if she can borrow it, which Yuuichi doesn’t mind. Asking where to buy nikuman, Yuuichi tells her the shopping arcade so Makoto goes off to buy some.

Later on Yuuichi checks to see if Makoto has returned. Entering her room, he sees Makoto on the floor reading manga and eating a box of nikuman. Yuuichi tells her that if she eats all of them she won’t be able to eat dinner, so he decides to help her by eating one. Though Makoto is transfixed on the manga, she simply agrees with Yuuichi. Only later does she realises and comes barging back in to Yuuichi’s room. After Makoto having a bit of a tramp, Yuuichi points out she has left over pork on her face. Akiko comes by and asks Makoto about the tofu, but it turns out that Makoto used the money to buy the nikuman. Though Akiko isn’t bothered by this, since she feels sorry for Makoto since she lost her memory.

Later that night, Nayuki returns home, but Yuuichi is heading out. Nayuki asks him where he is going but he simply rep05lies eliminating ghosts. Returning to the school he sees Mai in the same spot as last time. Giving her some food, he asks her about the sword, but a cloaked figure is approaching behind him. Mai uses her sword to reveal that it was Makoto pretending to be a ghost. Although scared out of her wits, Yuuichi hits Makoto on the head, but Mai pats her on the head because she thinks Makoto wants to be patted. Makoto wants to return home but is afraid to go by herself. So Yuuichi goes along with her, but before he leaves, Mai asks him to be nice to her.

Impressions

This has got to be the best episode out of the first 5 so far. The transition between the girls was done rather smoothly and the humour was great. Also with Yuuichi’s pranks on Makoto come to fruitation, e.g. the ero-hon prank, as they are part of the game. But I must also admit, Sugita Tomokazu just plays out the roles perfectly.

Well at the start we now that the little girl talking about dreams is Ayu and that she is the one dreaming. Though I do wonder are KyoAni going to have a small narration with Ayu at the start of every episode. If I recall correctly from the game, the narrations stopped at a certain point. Also some people make think that the pace is picking up again after this episode, but I know that they have only started to scratch the surface of any of the girl’s arcs.

One thing that kind of bugs me is at the end. Mai seems to know about Makoto’s situation but that wasn’t present in the Toei version, and I’m sure it wasn’t present in the game. So seems like KyoAni are taking a bit of creative license to it. Not that it’s a bad thing.

Next week. Makoto getting a job?
