Monday night I was invited by my good friend neuralPLEX to go to the Preview Night for the 10th Japanese Film Festival, Sydney. Seeing how it was a free ticket, I couldn’t refuse as I haven’t been to the cinemas since Snakes on a Plane. So after spending an hour (and lots of money) playing Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune 2, eating a serving of spicy Korean Ramen, and meeting up with a few more friends we were ready to see the movie that we would see. That movie was Kamikaze Girls.

Kamikaze Girls is a film about two girls, Momoka (Kyoko Fukada) and Ichigo (Anna Tsuchiya). Momoko is a girl who is immersed in the dreamy, doll-like fashion of the “Lolita” scenes, wanting to escape the boredom of her rural hometown Shimotsuma. One day she meets a yankee biker chick, Ichigo, who is her fashion opposite. The two form an unlikely friendship and are on a journey discovering about themselves and their futures. This is a mildly surreal, comically journey into Japan’s youth subcultures based on the novel by Novala Takemoto.
It was a very enjoyable film overall and with the comical parts made it even better. Now I’m not going to do a review of the film, as it was made in 2004, but I would recommend those to go see it. Mainly the Japanese Film Festival have a variety of films that you can view, with a total of 20, varying from drama, action, and horror. All which vary from 2004 to 2006. The Film Festival runs from the 29 November to 8 December and you can see what is screening and when at their website.
Although Sydney isn’t the only city to be a part of the Film Festival, the next and finally city is Perth. More can be found on the website.
