ARIA The Natural - 14

In Akari’s letter to Ai she says that with the weather still hot, she tends to wake up early. At that Akari wakes up witht he time being 4:20 am, she gets changed and goes out on her gondola. With President Aria with her, Akari apologizes to me him for taking him out so early. Akari rows by some poles called ‘parina’ and explains what they are used for. In one case being a marking for a business. Grabbing hold on one, she uses it to push herself forward and make the gondola glide. She says to president Aria that it feels like they are the only people in Neo-Venezia. They come across a big landmark and see that the sun is rising up, with Akari deciding to head back to Aria Company.

Upon arriving back at Aria Company, Akari sees Alicia and asks her why Aria Company doesn’t have its own parina. Alicia says that she doesn’t know why and think its a good idea to have one, and let Akari design one. At first Akari think she is not upto the task but Alicia knows that Akari understands Aria Company well. With the task at hand, Akari apologizes to Alice and Aika about not going out for practice and starts work on designing one, with President Aria doodling next to her. But Akari is having trouble thinking of ideas and after rocking on her chair she falls over. Wondering what she feels about Aria Company, Akari gets an idea and rummages through some boxes in a storage room. Upon her rummaging, she finds a photo album and starts looking through, where she happens to find a photo of Grandma in her younger days with President Aria. Whilst looking through the album she also finds a piece of paper revealing a design for a parina.

Heading back downstairs, Akari happens to see Grandma in the kitchen cooking food. Eating at the table, Grandma sees the parina design that Akari found and says how nostalgic it is. Akari asks if Grandma was the one who designed it but she says that it was Akari’s seniors who desgned it. Wondering why they didn’t make one Grandma explains that the colour couldn’t be decided since Aria Company was a young company and a colour couldn’t be decided. Plus with the business being busy they forgot about making a parina. Akari wonders if it is still okay for her to design one but Grandma reassures her that she is anticipating seeing Akari’s design. With Alicia arriving back, she is surprised to see Grandma and starts talking to her.

After Grandma takes her leave, Akari returns to thinking of a design for the parina. Sitting in the gondola with President Aria looking at Aria Company, Akari ask President Aria what kind of person was the designer of the parina was. President Aria tries to explain by various skits but Akari says that she doesn’t understand. Thinking of the colours blue and white, Akari starts relating the colours to the environment around her like the ocean and sky. With these thoughts in mind, Akari is now creating a design for the parina. In the morning Akari shows Alicia the design and Alaicia comments that its wonderful.

With the design done, the unpainted parina is delivered to Aria Company by Woody, Akari gets ready to start painting with the help of President Aria. Aika and Alice drop by to see if they can help Akari, But Akari turns them down for help as she wants to do it by herself. With Akari painting, she accidently got paint on her face she wiped her brow, President Aria starts laughing but he also has paint on his face from opening the paint tins. With the parina finished, it is then hammered into the ground. Later in the afternoon, Alicia returns and sees the new parina which is designed similar to that of the Undine uniform of Aria Company. Alicia suggests that they have a tea party to celebrate the making of the parina. While having tea, Alicia congratulates Akari on doing well on her own, but Akari says that she didn’t do it all on her own, she had the help of her senior’s previous design.

The next day Akari is back with Aika and Alice to practice and the two are amazed at the parina that Akari designed. Aika wants to see with Alicia but Alice stops her by saying they are starting practice. As they are leaving, Akari says that its an important person and time that she gets to see. Ai interprets this as someone that will be waiting for Akari to return to Aria Company and how wonderful that is.

Well this episode was harder to blog about than I expected. For one the word ‘parina’ I am not too sure about. After searching I cannot find any information about such a thing, all results I found just call them poles. Though the most difficult part was towards the end where Alicia and Akari are having tea time. I completely went blank after trying to understand what they were talking about. And at the very end of Akari’s letter to Ai. The above is only my interpretation of what they are saying. Such is the case when your Japanese language skills are at such a level. So when I watch the subbed version I’ll probably change it.

Well animation was done well at the very start of the show. Slightly went down towards the middle but went back up again towards the end. I like the idea that the parina that Akari designed is based off the Undine uniform as it also represents that it is a member of Aria Company. Though I wonder for future episodes will the parina appear from now or disappear?? I guess time will tell. It was also wonderful to see a photo of Grandma in her younger years and goes to show how long Aqua cats can live, and I can imagine President Aria would be quite old in human years.

Palinas are used to tie your Gondolas to. They can also serve as a marker-sign for your building( a representative, so to speak).

Regarding the evening scene with Alicia and Akari, they were chatting about the proof of their existence, and Akari has a sudden realisation that the palina is proof of her existence at ARIA Company, and how it will mark that evening spent with Alicia and President Aria forever and ever.

Ai replied back saying that if that is the case, then if she were to read back the old emails she had with Akari, she would be able to relive the moments of the past, and finds that wonderful.

So the palina serves two purposes for the premise of the episode. Nostalgia and Proof of Existence.

To Alicia and Akari, the palina serves to remind me of the good old times.

To customers and other people, it serves as the proof of existence that Alicia and Akari once served at ARIA Company, even when Alicia and Akari have passed away.

    Cheers.
