Such a sad day for Australians all around. The Socceroos have lost to Italy 1-0 with Italy scoring by a penalty shot in the last minute of the game. But that is the result and now it must be accepted. Overall the game was evenly matched in the 1st half with Australia with possesion of the ball about 56% of the time. Italy had a good defense against Australia but until Marco Materazzi was given a red card at the 50th minute Italy was down to 10 players. At that point Australia was on the full offensive and they played really well. The penalty came when Lukas Neill was judged to have brought down Fabio Grosso in stoppage time.
I believed that Australia has done well in this World Cup, despite many bad referee decisions, and that they had the capability to make it to the quarter finals. Like many Australians, I am proud of how far the Socceroos have gone and I am proud to be an Australian.
